Clearing land and cultivating crops, reaping true knowledge through sweat
2026-01-05
Our vegetable garden welcomes harvest - cabbage stretches its thick leaves, spinach is fresh and watery, lettuce blooms layer by layer like flowers. The children held the vegetables they had planted with their own hands and cheered, "Harvest, harvest!" Their laughter was as clear as silver bells. In the picking class of our school's school-based curriculum "Farming", teachers and students always feel excited. Since we cultivated the barren land in front of the gymnasium as a labor education base in 2016, this special course has been like a seed, taking root, sprouting, and thriving on campus. I still remember the scene when the first group of students first set foot on this land: the shovel turned over the hard soil, woke up several small insects, and caused bursts of exclamations; Those hands that are used to holding pens feel a bit awkward and clumsy when they first grip agricultural tools. However, it was from that moment on that change quietly occurred - plowing, sowing, transplanting, watering, every drop of sweat witnessed growth; Pulling grass, fertilizing, erecting scaffolding, and pest control, every time I bend down, it embodies persistence. Wang Yongyi, a student who graduated in 2025, deeply recalled in her diary: "For several weeks, the work of weeding and turning the soil was repetitive and boring, but when we carefully planted the seedlings we cultivated with our own hands into the soil, all the fatigue turned into expectations... We participated in the process of plant life in this way, and for the first time truly understood that it is the earth that nurtures life." This realization and growth is the most precious harvest of labor education. The children's love for the "Farming" course has strengthened our determination to deepen curriculum reform. We always adhere to the educational philosophy of "returning time to students and teaching methods to students". Based on the school situation and the characteristics of each stage, we carry out labor education in an orderly manner, develop rich and colorful labor courses, build a good "life and practice" education base, optimize the integration of labor education with other education, truly achieve the "five educations simultaneously", and cultivate future world leaders who can shoulder the great responsibility of national rejuvenation. In particular, we adhere to the basic principle of "internalization and self-education", pioneering a three in one literacy structure of "excellent character, strong fitness heart, and key abilities", cultivating a "3+5E" moral education curriculum system - daily exercise to strengthen the body, weekly class group meetings to cultivate character, monthly theme education to inspire thinking, education courses to enhance literacy every semester, and growth courses to broaden horizons every academic year. This system organically connects and integrates students' learning and life, subject knowledge and practical activities. At the same time, we vigorously expand our practical platforms and communicate both inside and outside the classroom: red research inherits the revolutionary spirit, career research plans the direction of life, cultural research cultivates patriotism, agricultural research experiences the hardships of farming, industrial research experiences the power of technology, and military research hones willpower and quality. On campus, we have developed diverse labor elective courses such as horticultural cultivation, Jingchu printing and dyeing, classic paper art, cooking and baking; Outside of school, we innovatively carry out volunteer services, club public welfare, social practice and other expansion activities, focusing on improving students' labor literacy and practical abilities. Labor education ultimately boils down to life education. When children sow a seed with their own hands, they learn responsibility; When they sweat profusely under the scorching sun, what they understand is perseverance; When they reap the fruits of their labor, they experience the value of creation. That once barren land has now become a vibrant educational land, nurturing not only vegetables and fruits, but also the sound personality, abundant soul, and comprehensive development of students. I believe that children can not only explore the sea of books, but also step on the soil; They can both look up at the stars and bend down to cultivate, and they will surely grow into new generations with comprehensive development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics, and labor. They will move towards the future with solid steps and create beauty with diligent hands. (New Society)
