Make traditional music popular overseas
2026-01-13
Dressed in Hanfu, a pipa, and a speaker, Ma Ruoming, a Chinese girl traveling to Italy, often plays in the streets and alleys of Milan. The sound of the pipa strings always attracts many passersby to slow down and stop to listen. Ma Ruomen recently gave a live interview to a reporter from China News Service, discussing how to make traditional Chinese music "sound" on the streets overseas. In early 2017, shortly after arriving in Milan, Ma Ruoming carried a pipa to play in front of Milan Cathedral for the first time. At first, she just had the mentality of "practicing piano on the street", but unexpectedly received a good response, and many passersby gave her sincere recognition and praise after the performance. Afterwards, she began to perform regularly on the streets and has since performed over a hundred times. In Milan, street performances are not improvised and require the application of a street performer certificate. Performances in front of landmarks such as Milan Cathedral and Sforza Castle require a reservation 2 to 3 months in advance. Therefore, I cherish every opportunity to perform and carefully select Hanfu costumes, prepare makeup, bring giant panda dolls and a brand with the words' Chinese Pipa 'written on it. I also make small cards with an introduction to the Italian pipa for passersby to read, "said Ma Ruoming. Compared to traditional stage performances, street performances are more casual and closer to the audience. The audience is attracted by music, they can stay if they like it, and they can leave at any time if they are not interested, "Ma Ruomeng said. When she first started playing on the street, she was nervous and uneasy, but as the performance progressed, passersby stopped and listened, and she gradually relaxed. Through the polishing of each performance, she continuously accumulates experience and optimizes the content of her performances. Whether it's song selection, music expression, clothing and makeup, equipment and props, we must strive for excellence. Gradually, more and more local audiences were attracted to her performance, which also earned her a stable and warm attention on the streets of Milan. During street performances, Ma Ruoming always receives kindness from strangers. She said, "I remember one rainy day when I was playing 'River of the Moon' in the hallway in front of Milan Cathedral. A passing Italian girl said that the music reminded her of her deceased grandmother and thanked the pipa vocal cords for their warmth and comfort. There was also a time when I was playing in front of a castle, and a group of young dancers passed by, dancing spontaneously to the music. I really enjoyed the unknown possibilities and gentle collisions in street performances, perhaps a bouquet of flowers, a Polaroid photo, a sketch portrait, or a repeatedly folded urinal. ”Ma Ruoming said that the brief yet genuine connection between people through music has made her feel the power of music firsthand. These feedback from passersby have also made Ma Ruoming constantly think about how to make the beauty of pipa music understood by more people. In order to allow more listeners from different backgrounds to immerse themselves in music, she treats each street performance as a carefully choreographed mini concert. Ma Ruoming said, "I will alternate the interpretation of Chinese and Western instruments. Chinese music includes solo pipa pieces such as' Spring River Flower Moon Night ', as well as popular Chinese pop songs and film and television scores. Western pop songs such as' My Heart Will Never Die' performed by pipa have unique charm and can resonate with the audience." It is rumored that Ma Ruoming graduated from Milan Polytechnic University with a major in architecture and urban design and currently works in design related fields in Italy. In her spare time, she plays pipa on the streets. In addition to street performances, she actively participates in various cultural exchange activities in the local area. During the activities, she also introduces the pipa to the locals and popularizes traditional Chinese music knowledge. Starting from 2023, Ma Ruoming will attempt to film and record street performances, and produce videos to publish on online platforms. From performer to video creator is a new challenge, and I hope that through these videos, the pipa and Hanfu can be seen and loved by more people. Music is a way for me to communicate with the world, and the pipa is a close friend who has accompanied me all the way. ”Ma Ruoming said that in the future, she hopes to continue refining her skills, constantly expanding the expressive boundaries of the pipa, and attempting to interpret works in different styles such as rock and modern. I also look forward to stepping onto a broader stage and connecting people from different cultural backgrounds with music
