Zhu Dingwen, a renowned short track speed skater from Hong Kong and executive director of the Hong Kong Institute of Speed Skating, has recently taken a step further in promoting ice skating. He has found a professional ice rink in Shenzhen that is close to Olympic standards and equipped with professional short track speed skating safety mats for skaters in the Greater Bay Area. The Hong Kong Institute of Speed Skating and Shenzhen Pengwan International Ice Sports Center officially reached a cooperation agreement on the 9th, establishing the Shenzhen Short Track Speed Skating Training Base, dedicated to promoting short track speed skating in the Greater Bay Area. Zhu Dingwen, who served as the flag bearer for the Hong Kong delegation at the opening ceremony of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, recently held a media exchange event at the Pengwan International Ice Sports Center in Shenzhen. He said, "I have always dreamed of becoming an athlete since I was young, but I hope my students don't leave home too far away for training like me. This is a difficult road, and I hope to create a better training environment for them." 26 year old Zhu Dingwen calls himself a "ice chaser," and he has been traveling from Hong Kong to Northeast China every month or even every weekend to "chase ice" since he was five or six years old. In order to relieve local youth in Hong Kong from such hardship, he established a speed skating academy in Hong Kong after the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, providing professional basic training conditions for local youth. He said, "My original intention was to cultivate athletes who could stand on the podium at the Winter Olympics." With his efforts, the Hong Kong Speed Skating Institute not only promoted speed skating in Hong Kong, but also attracted young people from Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and even some Southeast Asian countries to come and train. Zhu Dingwen admitted that Hong Kong's ice rink conditions are limited, and currently only basic training can be conducted on ice rinks that are close to international standards, especially for short track speed skating events that require high professionalism from the venue. Therefore, he collaborated with Shenzhen Pengwan International Ice Sports Center to establish the Shenzhen Short Track Speed Skating Training Base. I hope to step out of Hong Kong and promote short track speed skating throughout the Greater Bay Area. Shenzhen has a strong foundation in ice and snow sports and a vast market potential. We will establish a systematic short track speed skating training base here. ”He said. Through this collaboration, he hopes to provide better training conditions for more teenagers, giving them the opportunity to participate in short track speed skating training and competitions. Four years ago at the Beijing Winter Olympics, the Hong Kong delegation had only Zhu Dingwen as a "lone seedling" in the ice event. In the short track speed skating event of the 2025 Asian Winter Games, a team of six from Hong Kong, China participated and also made their first appearance on the international stage as a "group", participating in two team events. Zhu Dingwen said, "When I first started practicing short track speed skating, there were less than 20 people skating together. Now there are over 200 amateur and professional athletes in Hong Kong." He introduced that the Hong Kong Speed Skating Institute has made a lot of efforts to promote the popularization of short track speed skating. Through cooperative projects and experience classes with the school, more young people have learned about, been exposed to, and participated in this sport. Zhu Dingwen said, "I hope to popularize short track speed skating, a niche sport. Everyone knows that the cost of ice and snow sports is not low, but we actually lowered the cost to a very low level in order to popularize it rather than elite it. Moreover, we also provide scholarships to many grassroots families." Zhu Dingwen recalled, "In the past four years, we have trained a group of excellent students. This year, two students who started from the Hong Kong Speed Skating Academy have qualified for the International Skating Union Short Track Speed Skating Youth World Cup. In the just concluded Hong Kong Cup, our students and graduates won 16 gold medals in one fell swoop
