The number of charging facilities has exceeded 20 million - China has built the world's largest electric vehicle charging network

2026-01-29

According to the latest data from the National Energy Administration, as of the end of December 2025, the number of electric vehicle charging facilities in China has reached 20.092 million. Among them, there are 4.717 million public charging facilities (guns) and 15.375 million private charging facilities (guns). At present, China has built the world's largest electric vehicle charging network, supporting the charging demand of over 40 million new energy vehicles. In recent years, charging infrastructure has achieved a leapfrog development in China. The Yangcheng Lake Service Area, located at the intersection of the Shanghai Nanjing Expressway and the Shanghai Chengdu Expressway, has a large daily traffic volume and is an important window for observing the transformation of transportation infrastructure from "functional guarantee" to "scenario economy". Unlike the anxious memory of queuing for 2 hours to charge here 5 years ago, now driving through the Yangcheng Lake service area, 84 charging guns make charging convenient and fast. Here, the power supply department has cooperated with the service area to complete a large-scale electricity capacity expansion renovation, increasing the total charging power to 5120 kilowatts, which is 21 times that of 5 years ago. State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Company has also implemented a provincial-level health management system for electric vehicle charging facilities, using digital twins and artificial intelligence technology to achieve remote, real-time, and intelligent monitoring and diagnosis of charging facilities. At present, the system covers more than 100 charging stations and thousands of charging piles in Jiangsu Province, serving over 200000 car owners. Not only the highway service area, but also the charging facilities in popular scenic spots are being upgraded. Every year during the Spring Festival holiday, Tongli Ancient Town in Wujiang, Jiangsu welcomes a large number of tourists. In order to facilitate the charging of electric vehicles, the local power supply department renovated the charging station adjacent to the scenic area before the Spring Festival, increasing the charging speed by 167%. Taking a car with a battery capacity of 60 kWh as an example, the time required to charge from 10% to 90% is reduced from the past 50 minutes to about 20 minutes, "said Zhao Meng, Marketing Department of State Grid Suzhou Power Supply Company. In addition, car owners can also check the availability of charging stations through the app. In order to promote the overcharging and global development of charging piles, State Grid Suzhou Power Supply Company launched a special upgrade plan for charging facilities from June 2025. 698 charging piles located in key areas such as transportation hubs, scenic spots, and core business districts, as well as 558 old charging piles scattered throughout urban and rural areas, were upgraded with high-power upgrades to eliminate "range breakpoints" caused by equipment failures and connect the "main artery" of the city's green travel network. In 2025, the development of charging facilities in China will continue to improve and upgrade, presenting three overall characteristics. The relevant person in charge of the National Energy Administration introduced that firstly, the scale has grown faster. From the first charging station built in China in 2006 to the number of charging facilities exceeding one million in June 2019, it took 13 years; From 1 million to exceeding 10 million by June 2024, it took 5 years; But it only took 18 months to go from 10 million to 20 million. Secondly, the charging efficiency is higher, and the layout and construction of high-power charging facilities are accelerated. The average charging power of a single gun in public stations nationwide has reached 46.5 kilowatts, with a 33% year-on-year increase in charging efficiency and a significant improvement in charging service experience. Thirdly, the coverage of facilities is wider. A total of 71500 charging stations have been built in the service areas of highways nationwide, covering over 98% of the service areas. 19 provinces have achieved full coverage of charging facilities in every township. To cope with the rapidly growing demand for charging, China will further enhance its charging infrastructure service capabilities. In September 2025, six departments including the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration jointly issued the "Action Plan for Doubling the Service Capacity of Electric Vehicle Charging Facilities in Three Years (2025-2027)", which clarified the goals and action paths for the development of charging facilities in the coming period. By the end of 2027, China will have built 28 million charging facilities nationwide, providing over 300 million kilowatts of public charging capacity, meeting the charging needs of over 80 million electric vehicles, and doubling the capacity of charging services. Experts say that the charging network is the "blood circulation system" of the new energy vehicle industry. With more charging facilities taking root on the land of China, every electric vehicle will be able to charge, charge quickly, and charge well, and China's new energy vehicle industry will also usher in broader development space.
