Small cherries achieve 'big business' cooperation

2026-02-03

As the Spring Festival approaches, Chilean cherries are popular in the Chinese New Year goods market. Although China and Chile are separated by a vast ocean, freshly picked cherries travel from Chilean orchards to Chinese dining tables, spanning nearly half of the world, and their delicious flavor remains undiminished. Little cherries ride on the fast train of efficient collaboration in the supply chain, reflecting the constantly tightening economic and trade ties between China and Chile and the opportunities brought by China's high-level opening-up to the outside world. Chile is far away from China, but the cherries we produce can be enjoyed by Chinese consumers with almost freshly picked quality. ”Ivan Marambio, the president of the Chilean Fruit Exporters Association, believes that this is a miracle. The harvest season of Chilean cherries coincides with the peak season of Chinese holiday consumption at the end of the year and the beginning of the year, occupying the advantage of "timing". The reduction of institutional costs has created favorable conditions for Chilean cherries to enter the Chinese market on a larger scale. In 2005, China and Chile signed a free trade agreement; In 2008, Chilean cherries were officially allowed to enter the Chinese market with zero tariffs. Chile opened a direct sea freight route to the Chinese market in 2018, the "Cherry Express", with a transportation cycle shortened to about 23 days. In 2025, the airline routes will be further encrypted, and the number of direct flights will double compared to the previous year. After these cherries arrive in China, they are greeted by customs clearance conveniences such as "advance declaration", "immediate inspection and release upon arrival", and almost seamless cold chain logistics. The dual effects of policies and markets work together to complete this relay of seizing the "freshness" and make "freedom of the tongue" possible. As supply increases and costs decrease, cherries are entering more ordinary households. The 'sweetness' on the tip of the tongue is also the' sweetness' of development and income growth. Driven by the demand in the Chinese market, the Chilean cherry industry has flourished and has become the largest fruit planted in the country and an important economic pillar. According to the Chilean Fruit Exporters Association's estimation, the country will export 131 million boxes (5 kilograms per box) of cherries in the 2025-2026 season, of which over 90% are expected to be shipped to China. Industry data shows that the cherry industry provides about 200000 job opportunities annually for the local area, accounting for one-third of the total employment opportunities in Chile's fruit industry. China provides a vast market, Chile provides high-quality products, and this win-win "sweetness" is not limited to cherries. From blueberries from Peru, mangosteen from Thailand, avocados from Kenya to coffee beans from Honduras, more and more global delicacies are crossing mountains and seas, enriching the choices of Chinese consumers. From promoting free trade agreement negotiations to hosting exhibitions such as the China International Import Expo, to continuously optimizing the business environment and opening up China to embrace and gather global goods. In 2025, the total retail sales of consumer goods in China will exceed 50 trillion yuan for the first time, and every subtle change in the Chinese market is nurturing a trend. From the production end to the consumption end, an open Chinese market means more shared opportunities and win-win stories. (New Society)
