New Chapter on the Genealogy of "Gold" in the Forest
2026-02-04
Developing agroforestry is an important strategy for many regions to promote the dual transformation of ecological and economic values in county-level economies. For a period of time, China's understory economy has achieved remarkable results, from a single fruit, a leaf, a tuber to a chain, and then to enriching the local people. Under forest economy refers to the development of an eco-friendly economy, including under forest planting, under forest breeding, forest landscape utilization, etc., based on the principle of sustainable management while maintaining the health of the ecosystem, relying on the "forest treasure trove" that integrates reservoirs, grain depots, money depots, and carbon depots. It has significant significance in promoting green development, rural revitalization, and building a strong ecological security barrier. At present, China's understory economy has achieved large-scale management and utilization of over 600 million acres of forest land, with 34 million employees and 950000 various types of business entities, with an annual output value exceeding 1 trillion yuan. As a major forest and ecological product country, China has always taken into account the cultivation of forest resources, forest land management, resource utilization, brand building, and other aspects, promoting the mutual empowerment of "green content" and "gold content" in forest areas, so that there are industries under the forest, ecology can be protected, farmers can increase their income, and citizens can be healthier. To do a good job in agroforestry, on the one hand, we need to strive for excellence and strengthen the forest product industry chain, and take multiple measures to realize the value of "good things in the forest". Unlike crops grown on relatively flat farmland, agroforestry has a strong forest environment background and carries the ecological value of "forest treasures". Whether relying on the natural cool and humid environment under the forest to plant traditional Chinese medicine, or collecting naturally grown wild vegetables, pine cones, wild bacteria, etc., through continuous chain supplementation, extension, and strengthening, "forest delicacies" can be transformed into ready to eat foods, health supplements, natural daily necessities, etc., occupying a place in people's production and life. For example, the Saihanba Machinery Forest Farm located in Chengde City, Hebei Province, relies on high-quality forest environment to carry out experimental research on edible fungi, understory ginseng and other forest edge Chinese herbal medicines, as well as the cultivation and domestication of wild flowers such as Cypriptylum grandiflorum. From seedling breeding, wild imitation planting, deep processing to diversified forest product sales, different enterprises are linked together to form an interdependent and mutually valuable agroforestry industry chain. Next, we should significantly enhance the added value and brand effect of forest products by strengthening the industrial chain, upgrading from a solitary "basket seller" to a "super store" for marketing in all directions, and driving the prosperity and income generation of forest residents. On the other hand, we need to enhance forest tourism and forest health brands, and activate new consumption drivers. A good ecological environment is the "golden signboard" of the agroforestry economy and the health and well-being of the people. Against the backdrop of the deepening of aging population and the general improvement of people's health awareness in our country, forest tourism and forest health care models that utilize forest scenery, forest food and medicine, and deeply integrate health preservation and natural experience, enable more people to enter the forest, understand the forest, and establish intricate life links with the forest. By improving public service facilities such as transportation and sightseeing to the forest, creating a "one place, one characteristic" all season characteristic tourism route, it is conducive to enhancing the quality and attractiveness of forest tourism and forest health. For example, Liuba County in Shaanxi Province, located in the southern foothills of the Qinling Mountains, has launched a five sensory experience tourism boutique route of "enjoying flowers in spring, escaping heat in summer, sightseeing in autumn, and skiing in winter", allowing tourists to promote the deep integration of health preservation, elderly care, leisure, fitness, sightseeing, and sports in the vast forest sea, greatly improving the service quality and market competitiveness of forest tourism and forest health care, meeting people's growing demand for a beautiful ecological environment, and achieving a value leap from "selling primary products" to "selling ecological experiences".
