When AI becomes the 'new agricultural tool': from relying on weather to 'data steering'

2026-02-05

At noon on the day of hoeing, sweat drips down the soil under the crops. In traditional beliefs, agriculture is always associated with hardship. On February 3, 2026, the No. 1 central document, Opinions of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council on Anchoring Agricultural and Rural Modernization and Pushing Forward the Comprehensive Revitalization of Rural Areas, was released. This is the 14th No. 1 central document guiding the work of "agriculture, rural areas and farmers" since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and the first No. 1 central document of the "15th Five Year Plan". The document clearly proposes to develop agricultural new quality productivity according to local conditions and promote the deep integration of artificial intelligence and agriculture. The No.1 document provides a comprehensive overview. Walking into the Central Plains, you will find that this is no longer a paper blueprint, but the jumping data in farmers' phones, the automatic start stop valves in pumping stations, and the cruising drones in the sky. In the Hongsheng Cooperative in Huojia County, Xinxiang, grain growers no longer have to watch the weather to eat and water without carrying shovel. They just need to click on their mobile phones. Starting from 2022, Huojia County will invest 930 million yuan to build 300000 acres of high standard farmland, covering 163 villages in 11 townships throughout the county. Farmers only need to operate on their mobile phones to command any sprinkler in the field to operate, and the "deep buried drip irrigation" system accurately delivers water and fertilizer to the roots of wheat. Not only that, the "smart agriculture" software on farmers' mobile phones is connected to the local high standard farmland data intelligence center, providing clear information on soil moisture, insect infestation, seedling situation, disaster warning, and more. Compared to ordinary farmland, planting high standard farmland is like playing a game with young people. When it's time to irrigate, fertilize, and prevent pests and diseases, the system will provide timely warnings and reminders. These are not individual cases, but a microcosm of new agricultural productivity. By the end of 2024, Henan has built a total of 88.08 million mu of high standard farmland. More importantly, technology is not just a decoration, but a tangible benefit: an average income increase of 233 yuan per person, and a loss reduction of 300 yuan per mu due to AI warning - behind the numbers are the real smiling faces of farmers. Some people question whether AI farming is a 'flower rack'? Will they not adapt to the local conditions? In Lankao County, a "super farmer" platform is being built locally, integrating meteorological stations, insect lamps, and soil moisture meters, with data directly connected to the 5G command center; By overlaying the "Wanxiang Farming" agricultural model, not only can it answer the question of "how to treat wheat scab", but it can also automatically plan irrigation plans based on satellite remote sensing and soil sensors, saving 30% water and increasing fertilizer utilization by 25%. If you have never walked into the fields, if you have never had soil stuck under your feet, you may not know that agriculture has deeply embraced artificial intelligence. On the yellow soil, the old yellow ox has long become the old almanac, and artificial intelligence is the new direction. Of course, the new quality of agricultural productivity is not about turning farmers into programmers, but about embracing technology in agriculture and serving farmers. As Li Mengzhou, the director of the Agriculture and Rural Bureau of Huojia County, said, "We provide a one-stop solution from sowing to harvest, with someone answering questions, someone pushing warnings, and someone managing equipment." Farmers only need to use "new agricultural tools" well, and the rest is left to data and algorithms. The key to promoting the deep integration of artificial intelligence and agriculture is to be demand-oriented and use effectiveness as a benchmark. Henan's approach is worth learning from: the government sets up platforms, scientific research support, enterprise empowerment, and farmers play a leading role - only through multi-party collaboration can technology truly "grow" into the soil. If farmers are rich, then the country is rich; If agriculture is strong, then a country is strong. The strength of agriculture lies not in mechanical stacking, but in the integration of intelligence. When artificial intelligence becomes the new agricultural tool for farmers, when farming shifts from experience based work to data based work, agricultural modernization will have a solid foundation, and rural revitalization will have firm hope.
