Hainan Memories (excerpt)

The so-called 'ends of the earth' are right next to the highway, about 20-30 steps away. Of course there is a sea, right next to the rocks, but its' horns' are not visible. As for "Tianya", I can imagine the reason why ancient people named it after these two words thousands and hundreds of years ago. But today, man conquers nature. The main road here is the Ring Road, which leads directly to Nada. Along the way, there are famous attractions such as salt fields and iron mines. Where is "Tianya"? To my surprise, this' cape 'has such a large and peculiar rock mass; We saw two tall rocks leaning against each other, with waves blowing and the wind blowing, and the surface of the rocks had become quite smooth; The gap between two stones is spacious enough to accommodate people, and the ground is paved with fine sand; A few feet away, the blue waves gently beat against the rock roots. We joked at the time: it's a pity we're all old, otherwise we would have had to sit down in this crevice and talk about love for a long time. However, these strange stones remind me of a five character quatrain by Su Dongpo titled 'Dan'er Mountain': 'The abrupt pass is empty, and his mountain is not as good as mine.'. Look at the stones beside the road, they are all heavenly treasures! The depth of emotional attachment, until recently fifty years ago, was probably echoed by those who read this poem. I have reviewed the "Chronicles of Qiongzhou Prefecture in Daoguang" and under the category of "exiled officials", I know that exiled officials began in the Tang Dynasty, with a total of ten people, and in the Song Dynasty, there were also ten people; Under the category of 'Liuyu', it is known that there were one person from the Sui Dynasty, twelve people from the Tang Dynasty, and twelve people from the Song Dynasty. In the Ming Dynasty, there were a total of 22 exiled officials and refugees. These people are all "roadside stones" that supplement the heavenly legacy, aren't they? Of course, when Su Dongpo wrote this poem, he did not expect that after him, five famous Song dynasty officials who were exiled to this island would be punished for opposing peace talks and advocating resistance against the Jin dynasty, including Li Gang, Zhao Ding, and Hu Quan, who were famous for shaking the universe. These famous officials, during the Song Dynasty's southern migration, were unable to "repair the sky" and were exiled to this "sunken southeast" island as "roadside stones". Under a thousand years, it's truly amazing to read Su Dongpo's poem and sigh in unison! The operation of Hainan Island began in the Han Dynasty; I dare not boast about how the Han Dynasty once managed this pearl in the South China Sea. However, even though the Han Dynasty only used this precious island where "all springs on the earth turn into wine, and long forests without trees do not make money" as a place for pearl picking, it did not actually use it as a place to exile criminals. Probably since the Tang Dynasty, this area has been favored by the emperor; However, the Song Dynasty was even better than the Tang Dynasty. The imperial edict of Emperor Taizong of Song, which banished Lu Duoxun to Yazhou, includes two sentences: "We will spare no time in executing him and stop using the ritual of throwing him into the wilderness. Originally, the emperors of the Song Dynasty regarded exile to Hainan Island as only one level less than the crime of being executed by the Manchu people. Look, they regarded this place as a 'dangerous military state'. Only after the people have taken power can Hainan Island become a different Xintiandi. When visiting Xinglong Farm, I once again thought of this island in history and the poem by Su Dongpo. Xinglong Farm is a large farm operated by returned overseas Chinese. If you want to visit the entire farm and take a car ride around, it will take a day or two. Several tropical crops that were not available here before have now settled down here from millions of miles away. Just like the staff here, their ancestors or predecessors have traveled thousands of miles to make ends meet. Now that they have returned to this big island in the South China Sea of their motherland, they are not "roadside stones" but true heavenly helpers! Our car drove on the road between the white waves on one side and the vast rice fields on the other, stretching long. The season is at the end of the lunar new year, and farmers in northern China are preparing to slaughter Su wine, calculating this year's harvest in warm houses, and planning for next year's grain war, right? Not only in northern China, but also on both sides of the Yangtze River, farmers have just finished a battle and are preparing for a second one. However, in front of us, here in Hainan, we see the flat fields, new seedlings and tender green welcoming people. This is truly a spectacle. I also saw clusters of small grass growing continuously on both sides of the road. These small grasses are short and clustered, with small white flowers resembling fluffy balls, and their branches are clustered like covers, piled up like pearls. From a distance, they look like a white horse. I suddenly remembered a poem written by Wang Zuo during the Zhengtong period of the Ming Dynasty, called 'Duck Foot Grain', which is from the Five Classics. I asked Comrade Bai Guang who was accompanying us, 'Are these duck feet millet?' 'No!'! ”She answered. This is called airplane grass. Not long ago, there were duckfoot millet on the roadside. It's really fresh, airplane grass. After delving deeper, I finally found out that airplane grass is also everywhere and can be used as fertilizer. I asked what the duck foot millet is used for now, and she said, "Feed livestock. But there are better feed options than it
