Energy transition will create opportunities for global development
2026-02-06
Entering 2026, geopolitical tensions have once again made energy security a focal point of concern for countries around the world. Energy transition has always been regarded as an important way to enhance energy security, address climate change, and promote economic growth globally. Recently, a reporter from Guangming Daily conducted an interview with Bo Mingyuan, a member of the Executive Committee of the World Economic Forum and the General Manager of the Energy and Materials Center, in Davos, Switzerland. He believes that energy transition is particularly important in the current international situation, and China has played an active role in promoting the global energy transition process. The connotation of energy transformation continues to enrich. "Sustainability, affordability, and security are the three important dimensions we have been monitoring the energy system for the past 15 years. ”Bo Mingyuan stated that with the changing international situation, the focus of attention for countries and stakeholders is constantly adjusting. "Initially, sustainability was the most important concern, but then the focus shifted to affordability, and the current focus is undoubtedly on security. Nowadays, people's attention to security issues has significantly increased, and energy security has once again become a core issue at the national security level. ”Bo Mingyuan believes that the connotation of energy security currently being discussed has undergone earth shaking changes compared to 15 years ago. In the past, energy security mainly referred to the ability to obtain oil and natural gas. Currently, due to the continuous development of renewable energy and nuclear energy, energy sources are becoming more diversified. Therefore, energy security not only includes the energy itself, but also the key materials required in the process of generating renewable energy and nuclear energy. In addition, aspects such as power grid security, infrastructure security, and network security have also been included in the consideration of energy security. People are gradually realizing that energy has developed into a larger and more complex system. ”Bo Mingyuan stated that promoting energy transition is beneficial for all countries, although people have previously been more inclined to emphasize the importance of sustainability, affordability and safety are equally important for all countries. In view of this, Bo Mingyuan believes that it is particularly crucial to simultaneously promote energy transformation from three aspects: sustainability, affordability, and safety. "This is the trend and direction of future development. Each country should promote energy transition according to local conditions. ”Bo Mingyuan stated that based on his observations, all parties are approaching the issue of energy transformation with a more pragmatic attitude. "There is no universal energy transformation plan, and each country should find a suitable energy transformation path based on its own resource endowment, geographical location, and trading partners. He believes that, similar to other fields, there is currently a development gap in the global energy transition, which is mainly caused by two aspects: at the political level, governments with relatively slow transitions have not shown firm political determination and willingness, and policies lack predictability and long-term sustainability; At the economic level, emerging economies generally suffer from a lack of investment, and the international community's attention to these countries and regions is relatively low, resulting in a widening gap. According to our long-term research, a large portion of energy demand in the future will come from emerging economies, not just the United States or Europe, so we should increase funding and resource investment in relevant economies. China leads the global energy transition. China's development in renewable energy is outstanding, and its large-scale development has promoted the reduction of energy costs worldwide, which benefits all countries in the world. ”Bo Mingyuan stated that renewable energy will continue its current development momentum, and it has advantages in both economic cost and sustainability that other energy sources do not have. In his view, the global energy transition can be roughly divided into three stages. In the first stage, new energy sources such as solar and wind energy continuously enhance their competitiveness in terms of price, economic benefits, and sustainability. China has performed outstandingly in this stage, achieving significant results in fields such as solar energy, wind energy, electric vehicles, batteries, and high-voltage transmission, which is precisely the characteristic of the first stage, "Bo Mingyuan pointed out. He continued to talk about the second stage, which is mainly represented by technologies such as hydrogen energy, carbon capture and collection that are not yet fully mature in terms of economy but have significant advantages in sustainability. The related technologies are still in the process of development, and they are not yet comparable to solar and wind energy in terms of technological maturity and cost. The third stage is the systematic integration of energy technology, and some countries represented by China are already in the process of exploration and development. ”Bo Mingyuan said that at this stage, digital technology plays a key role. By empowering with cutting-edge technology, people will break away from the traditional situation of a single energy supply corresponding to a single energy demand, and instead integrate all supply and demand sides into the same system, making artificial intelligence and other technologies the regulators of energy supply and demand, achieving overall coordination and optimal configuration. In the future, we cannot separate energy technology from digital technology, but should focus on the integration and coordinated development of technology. When we discuss energy transition issues, many viewpoints often have a clear Western context. ”Bo Mingyuan said that when he came to China, he saw the continuous promotion of energy transformation. He pointed out that due to China's active development of the new energy industry, energy costs have been significantly reduced, which has benefited all countries. The cost of electricity has dropped far below what people could have imagined in the past. I believe that China will continue to open up to the outside world in the field of commerce, which will further promote the global energy transition. Currently, some countries are hesitant to slow down the pace of energy transition due to high initial costs. Regarding this, Bo Mingyuan believes that in the process of energy transition, countries should not only focus on short-term benefits, but also consider long-term benefits. They should not only pay attention to economic costs, but also consider social benefits. He stated that China has proven that energy transition not only helps reduce energy costs, but also creates a large number of job opportunities. Energy transition itself is a development opportunity.
