Empowering Urban Cultural Construction with Light and Shadow Technology
2026-02-13
On the New Year's Eve, the Central Radio and Television Tower on the West Third Ring Road in Beijing was brightly lit, with five main themes of "Blessing for the New Year", "Charm of the Capital", "Great Country Achievements", "Audiovisual Feast", and "Reunion Festival" flowing through the tower, integrating cultural connotations, urban style, and historical achievements into the night. This light and shadow feast created through broadcasting technology has not only become a popular landmark for citizens to check in, but also opened a new chapter in empowering the cultural construction of the capital with light and shadow technology, allowing the brilliance of technology and culture to shine in the city's night sky. Urban landmarks are concrete expressions of the urban spirit, empowered by light and shadow technology, allowing these silent buildings to rejuvenate and become "living carriers" that convey cultural connotations and showcase the style of the times. The Proposal of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China on Formulating the 15th Five Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development clearly states: "Promote the integration of culture and technology, promote the digital empowerment and information transformation of cultural construction, and develop new cultural formats." Empowering urban cultural construction with light and shadow technology is a vivid practice of implementing the requirements of integrated development of culture and technology. In the digital age, light and shadow technology has broken through the temporal and spatial limitations of traditional cultural dissemination, transforming urban landmark buildings into tangible and perceptible cultural carriers, and promoting the transformation of urban culture from "static display" to "dynamic expression". At the same time, as the core engine of nighttime cultural tourism economy, light and shadow performances can effectively activate urban stock resources, extend the cultural consumption chain, light up the urban night sky, demonstrate cultural confidence, and stimulate consumption vitality, injecting cultural and economic dual energy into the high-quality development of cities. Empowering urban cultural construction with light and shadow technology is not just a flash in the pan during festivals, but rather a long-term development pattern based on resource endowment, deep cultivation of characteristic culture, and the construction of "shining on the spot, creating scenery online, and improving quality on the surface". Nowadays, this practice has blossomed and achieved significant results in many parts of the country. Beijing is using the Central Radio and Television Tower as a carrier to create a "cultural+technological+commercial+ecological" waterfront tourism belt; Xi'an Datang Night City takes the Big Wild Goose Pagoda water dance light and shadow show as its core, combined with immersive interactive performances, to achieve the transformation of cultural scenes into consumer scenes, making the prosperous Tang culture a new engine for urban consumption; Guangzhou Tower combines sports events and bay culture with the "Bay Area Three Colors" light and shadow show, showcasing the modern vitality of the millennium old Guangzhou city. These practices fully prove that light and shadow technology can not only create new cultural landmarks in cities, but also activate the nighttime economy, reshape cultural consumption scenes, and achieve a win-win situation between cultural and economic values. To better empower urban cultural construction with light and shadow technology, it is necessary to find the right starting point, promote deep integration through innovative practices, and make light and shadow a vivid expression of urban culture. Firstly, deeply cultivate local culture and let light and shadow carry the memory of the city. The core of light and shadow technology is cultural expression, and light and shadow shows that deviate from the cultural core will only become visual carnivals. For example, the Luoyang Digital Light and Shadow Performing Arts project "Luoshen Fu" is based on the Heluo culture, integrating myths and legends with historical heritage to create an immersive performance. Secondly, promote the integration of business formats and activate the development momentum through light and shadow. The value of light and shadow technology lies not only in creating a visual feast, but also in connecting diverse industries such as culture, commerce, and tourism. Chongqing has built a closed-loop system of "attraction stop experience consumption" with drone light shows as the core, transforming light and shadow traffic into development energy. Finally, we must adhere to the principle of technology for the good and balance light and shadow with ecological and cultural considerations. The application of light and shadow technology needs to uphold the bottom line of ecological protection and humanistic care. Wuhan's "Yellow Crane Tower at Night" adopts an environmentally friendly lighting design of "seeing light but not seeing lights", achieving a balance between light and shadow and ecology, balancing landscape effects with residents' lives and harmonious ecological environment, allowing light and shadow to illuminate the city without disturbing its tranquility. Light and shadow are the pen, the city is the scroll, and culture is the soul. Empowering urban cultural construction with light and shadow technology is never simply a matter of technical accumulation, but a deep integration of technology, culture, and urban development. From the revitalization of light and shadow in the Central Radio and Television Tower to the unique practices in various regions, we have seen the infinite possibilities that light and shadow technology brings to urban cultural construction. Only by adhering to the original intention of "putting the people at the center", deeply cultivating local culture, promoting business integration, and adhering to the principle of technology for the good, can light and shadow technology truly serve the expression of urban culture. Only then can every urban landmark become a spiritual lighthouse connecting history and the future, and let light and shadow not only illuminate the night sky of the city, but also illuminate the future of urban cultural development, and write more wonderful chapters on the picture of urban development and cultural prosperity.
