Quanzhou, Fujian: Sparkling lanterns symbolize auspiciousness

2026-02-13

A lantern, sixteen bamboo strips, and thousands of pinholes, in the hands of Quanzhou lantern artist Chen Xiaoping, gradually transformed into an auspicious light symbolizing a prosperous population. In Quanzhou dialect, "deng" and "ding" have the same pronunciation. Hanging lanterns symbolize people's beautiful wishes for a prosperous population and welcoming light. Before the Spring Festival, the reporter walked into Chen Xiaoping's studio, where dozens of lanterns were quietly displayed. The uniqueness of Quanzhou lanterns lies in the diversity of their techniques and regional characteristics. According to the production process, it can be mainly divided into three categories: colored tie lamps, needle punched boneless lamps, and engraved paper lamps. Cai Zha Deng is the oldest type of lantern with a long history, and it is also a type that Chen Xiaoping is good at making. To make a colorful lantern, it is necessary to first tie bamboo strips into a lamp frame, and then wrap it with paper or silk cloth. The entire process requires manual production. The paper cutting material silk lamp originated from the innovation of the paper cutting master Li Yaobao in the late Qing Dynasty. This type of lamp has no skeleton and is made entirely of cardboard with engraved patterns, making the manufacturing process particularly unique. The most amazing thing is the needle punched boneless lamp, which requires steel needles to pierce numerous pinholes on the cardboard during production, and then splice the cardboard together to form the lamp. The light source shines through the pinhole, appearing exquisite and transparent, fully reflecting the ingenuity of Quanzhou lantern craftsmen. How to integrate Quanzhou lanterns into modern life is an important issue faced by inheritors. Chen Xiaoping and her daughter work together to innovate, attempting to integrate new materials and modern technology into traditional lantern making, giving new life to this ancient craft. If the lanterns displayed every year are the same, it will inevitably make people feel lacking in novelty. We need to constantly innovate and inject new cultural connotations and the charm of the times. ”Chen Xiaoping said. (New Society)
