In September 2024, the Chinese National Atomic Energy Agency announced during the 68th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency that it would open 12 nuclear research facilities and experimental platforms, including the China Beishan High level Radioactive Waste Geological Disposal Laboratory (hereinafter referred to as the Beishan Laboratory), to countries around the world and the global South. From then on, Beishan Laboratory unveiled its mysterious veil. Since the 1980s, research teams have been continuously exploring and conducting experiments on the vast Gobi Desert in provinces and regions such as Xinjiang, Gansu, and Inner Mongolia. After 30 years, they finally finalized the site of Beishan Xinchang located in Mazongshan Town, Jiuquan City, Gansu Province. The overall construction progress of this laboratory located 560 meters underground has reached 82%. During the construction process, multiple technical difficulties have been overcome. After completion, the Beishan Laboratory will not only undertake the technical development and experimental demonstration of high-level radioactive waste disposal, but also promote nuclear science knowledge to the public, carry out international exchanges and cooperation, and showcase China's responsible national image to the outside world. High level radioactive waste (hereinafter referred to as high-level radioactive waste) has always received high attention from the international community. Since the introduction of the concept of high-level radioactive waste geological disposal in the mid-1980s, China's nuclear industry has gone through a 40 year process of high-level radioactive waste geological disposal. The nuclear industry in our country implements a closed loop path from uranium mining to nuclear waste disposal, and the Beishan Laboratory is responsible for the research and development of high-level radioactive waste disposal, which is the last link in this closed loop.
