"Transnational" Teacher Apprenticeship on the China Laos Railway

Whenever the train enters Luang Prabang Station, Li Shanshan, the conductor of Lao Zhong Railway Co., Ltd. Vientiane Central Station, always checks her watch. From Vientiane, Laos to Luang Prabang, it only takes 1 hour and 45 minutes. In the past, it took us five or six hours to drive from Vientiane to Luang Prabang, and the road was not easy to walk. After the railway from Vientiane to Kunming is opened, there is no longer a need to worry about being stranded. ”Li Shanshan smiled and said. On December 3, 2021, the China Laos Railway will be put into operation. In order to operate and maintain the China Laos Railway, China Railway Kunming Bureau Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "China Railway Kunming Bureau") has sent more than 700 professionals to Laos and trained hundreds of Laos railway workers and professional technicians, including Li Shanshan. In June 2021, Li Shanshan returned to Laos after graduating from Guangxi Normal University for Nationalities, coinciding with the recruitment of Laotian train attendants by Laos China Railway Co., Ltd., which is responsible for railway operations in Laos. During her study abroad in China, Li Shanshan was deeply impressed by the fast and safe high-speed trains, so she immediately registered, saying, "This is the first high-speed train line in Laos, and joining it is a proud thing. With her experience studying abroad in China, she was successfully selected, but soon encountered difficulties. The railway professional training is conducted in Chinese, and many professional terms are new to me. I cannot read them out or know what they mean. In the first few business exams, her grades were not ideal. As the Chinese train conductor dispatched by China Railway Kunming Bureau to Laos, Han Jialing is responsible for the training of five Laotian train crew members, including Li Shanshan. In order to enable Laotian flight attendants to quickly master business knowledge, Han Jialing patiently guided them to learn Chinese while actively learning Laotian language, striving to explain obscure and difficult professional terms clearly. Emergency brake valve, can brake in time in case of emergency. The broken window hammer can only be used in emergency situations... "Li Shanshan's notebook densely recorded every teaching content of Han Jialing, including railway operation procedures and etiquette services. With the careful guidance of Han Jialing, Li Shanshan made rapid progress. In their spare time, the mentor and apprentice, who were of similar age, became good friends. Half a year of training has passed in a flash. On December 4, 2021, the second day of the opening of the China Laos Railway, Li Shanshan, as a steward, participated in the duty task for the first time. "I was very nervous at that time, and my brain was blank when I saw the bustling passengers." Li Shanshan recalled that Han Jialing came up and said softly, "Don't be nervous, follow me, and I will show you. Time flies, and Li Shanshan's business capabilities are becoming increasingly mature. In September 2024, Li Shanshan was promoted to train conductor, completing her transformation from a railway newcomer to a business backbone. Soon, she faced a test. On November 24th of the same year, a Chinese passenger suddenly felt unwell on the train, with a body temperature of 39 degrees Celsius. According to the emergency plan, Li Shanshan brought the fever reducing medicine that was always on the train, assisted passengers in taking medication, and searched for medical personnel on the train through broadcasting. After finishing all of this, she immediately contacted an ambulance to go to the nearest station and take the passengers for medical treatment. After the passenger recovered, a banner was specially brought over. The banner reads' Affective passengers lend a helping hand, fulfill their duties with high moral standards'. Li Shanshan was deeply moved: "The Laos China Railway is a path of friendship between the two peoples, and serving the passengers of both countries well is the value of my work." As one of the first Laotian train conductors, Li Shanshan now shoulders the responsibility of mentoring her apprentices. Every time she is on duty, she patiently guides the crew to fill out passenger records, use ticket machines, and train announcements. Whenever Laotian flight attendants struggle to express themselves fluently in Chinese, Li Shanshan also transforms into a "Chinese teacher" and teaches by example. The inheritance of responsibility is like an intangible bond that tightly connects the hearts of railway personnel in China and Laos. On September 20, 2025, Han Jialing returned to China after completing her overseas training mission. On the separate platforms, she and Li Shanshan's master and apprentice made tearful appointments, "Don't say goodbye, because we will see each other again." Since the opening of the China Laos Railway, more than 700 Lao students have been trained through the "twinning" teaching mode of Chinese masters and Lao apprentices, including 14 students who have obtained driver's licenses for locomotive stewards and 10 students who serve as conductor. They use excellent professional technology to ensure the smooth operation of the China Laos railway. (New Society)
