May art always walk with the people

Last late autumn, a grand meeting between movies and citizens was held in Nanjing, Jiangsu - on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the birth of Chinese cinema, the 2025 China Film Performance Arts Week jointly organized by the China Film Performance Arts Society and the Nanjing Municipal Party Committee Propaganda Department came to an end. The most touching aspect of this cultural event with the theme of "Film, Performance, and People" is the opening of the door. 98 year old Tian Hua, as well as well-known veteran artists such as Zhu Xijuan and Niu Ben, and over a hundred film artists, have all stepped off the screen and entered the streets and alleys. The China Film Performing Arts Week has been held for three consecutive years, with no red carpet or traditional costumes for the opening event. In the first edition, we entered through the Zhonghua Gate and walked among art enthusiasts, enthusiastic citizens, and tourists. The ancient city walls witnessed the encounter between film art and urban context, as well as the closeness between the hearts of artists and audiences; In the second edition, we came to the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge and stood by the river with representatives from various sectors of society, such as model workers and craftsmen, to appreciate the spirit of self-reliance, self-improvement, and hard work of the builders of the "Zhengqi Bridge"; For the third time, we gathered at Chaotian Palace, where the stage belonged to children laughing in front of the "Lingxing Gate" stone slide, artists reciting "Light and Shadow Jinling - To China Film Performance Art Week" with deep affection, and the entire audience singing "We Walk on the Road". Apart from joyful songs, there is also silence. At the Yuhuatai Martyrs Memorial Hall and the Nanjing Massacre Martyrs Memorial Hall, artists hung their heads in silence, and the scene was so quiet that only their heartbeat and breathing remained. At that moment, the weight of history and the mission of art silently intertwined, allowing us to have a deeper understanding of the responsibility on our shoulders. In the past three years, there have been too many touching silhouettes of our warm encounters with the people and the city. Li Youbin had a friendly conversation with children who were copying ancient paintings; Tao Huimin and young actors performed a duet of "Dream of the Red Chamber" on the same stage; Zhang Fengyi took over a Chu King mask specially made by a citizen with both hands... The boundaries between the inside and outside of the screen gradually melted, and the light and shadow in the movie slowly merged into the daily scenery of a city. The outline of the 15th Five Year Plan proposes to 'enable the people to enjoy a higher quality of cultural life'. When I read this sentence, my heart warmed up. This is exactly the direction we are practicing and keeping in mind. The Art Week strives to broaden the boundaries of art serving the people, leading film performance artists into Nanjing Academy of Arts, into the Old Gate Dongyinxing Film Cinema, into the playwright Li Yuju's mustard seed garden, into the historical and cultural block of Xinanli, into the military camp, sharing their creations with community members, college students, and military officers and soldiers, listening to stories, and making art a bridge connecting each other's hearts. We also integrated public welfare, environmental protection, and patriotism education into the activities of the Art Week, and received spiritual baptism at the former site of Nanjing Film Machinery Factory and the site of the Second National Congress of the Chinese Socialist Youth League in Mei'an; On the Yangtze River cruise ship, fulfill the green commitment. With more and more positive feedback from the harvest, I have come to realize one thing: people need art, and art needs people even more. Next, it depends on how we can root the roots of art into a broader social and cultural soil, so that more ordinary people can meet, resonate with, and walk with art. The first thing we need to focus on is to accumulate the experience of Art Week and explore a replicable and sustainable "art into life" model, so that it is not just an annual festival, but also permeates into the cultural soil of daily life. Looking further ahead, the vitality of art ultimately lies in innovation. During the art week, film art can be more organically integrated with intangible cultural heritage techniques, urban landmarks, etc., and stimulate wonderful chemical reactions through collisions. This creative transformation can not only provide new interpretations of intangible cultural heritage in light and shadow, but also enable ancient streets and alleys to carry new memories, creating a traditional and modern artistic temperament for the entire city. The value of art ultimately returns to its nourishment and empowerment of society. Movies should be transformed into vivid footnotes for the inheritance of intangible cultural heritage, poetic expressions for ecological protection, moving forms of legal education promotion, immersive carriers for cultural tourism integration... Integrating into the tide of the times, paying attention to current issues, and becoming a unique and warm force for promoting social progress. And the source of all this power is the people. May art always walk with the people! (New Society)
