The integration of intangible cultural heritage interprets the story of ethnic unity

When the powerful drums and cymbals of Tibetan opera meet the graceful silk and bamboo of Cantonese opera, when the heroic figure of the snowy plateau meets the delicate water sleeves of the Lingnan land, a story of guarding the border engraved with a sincere heart, and a dialogue of intangible cultural heritage spanning mountains and seas, let the audience understand the story of national unity and feel the endless vitality of excellent traditional Chinese culture in light, shadow, and singing. On the evening of April 2, the original Tibetan and Cantonese historical poetic drama Lord Zhang in Tibet, jointly created by the Tibetan Opera Troupe of the Xizang Autonomous Region and the Guangdong Cantonese Opera Theater, was staged at the Tibetan Opera Art Center in Lhasa. The drama delves into historical details and is based on the story of Zhang Yintang's stay in Tibet in the late Qing Dynasty, combining the rigor of historical facts with the beauty of literature. The innovative artistic exploration and poetic stage structure restore the historical facts of border governance, demonstrate the national friendship and patriotism carried by "Zhang Dahua", interpret the community concept of "sharing weal and woe, honor and disgrace, life and death, and destiny", and integrate the inseparable ideological core of the Chinese nation's community consciousness and national sovereignty into singing, reciting, and scene after scene. More than a hundred years ago, Zhang Yintang, who went to Xizang, took the seeds of cosmos with him and gave them to the local people. Later, the cosmos took root and sprouted in Xizang. This type of flower is drought resistant and cold resistant, with strong vitality, and can bloom in barren environments. It was later affectionately known as the "Zhang Dahua" by the local people. More than a hundred years later, on the stage, the stone lion "Duosenge" stationed in the Tibetan yamen transformed into a narrator, telling the audience about the Guangdong diplomat Zhang Yintang's "work, responsibility, and dedication", regardless of personal honor or disgrace, only for the sake of national peace. In the end, although Zhang Yintang was transferred from Xizang due to the obstruction of reform, the seed of national unity has long been buried in the soil. The flowers are blooming with a letter, reflecting the picture of Xizang's flourishing age with blooming flowers and scorching sun. Tibetan opera and Cantonese opera, as representative works of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, have made the first in-depth dialogue of "Mr. Zhang's Residence in Tibet" highly innovative in artistic presentation. Director Sorang Zhandui said: "In the creation process, we always focus on cultural exchanges, exchanges, and blending, and deeply integrate the most authentic and characteristic elements of the two opera cultures, and present them to everyone through the modern drama performance style. Tibetan opera is loud and desolate, Cantonese opera is gentle and delicate, and the collision and integration of Tibetan and Cantonese operas are very interesting!" Wen Ruqing, the actor of Zhang Yintang and the head of the Guangdong Cantonese Opera Theater Group, said frankly that he overcame difficulties and challenges such as plateau reaction, high-intensity singing and dancing, and zero foundation of Tibetan language learning in the rehearsal process in Xizang. "My hard work was much smaller when I thought that the protagonist Zhang Yintang came to Xizang from Guangdong when the conditions were more difficult. I hope that the audience can feel the true temperature of the Han and Tibetan families and the people's common feeling, and remember the moving story of 'Zhang adult flower'." "The first time I heard the tone of Cantonese opera in Tibetan opera, there was no sense of discord. After watching the opera, I really understood the feelings of family and country behind 'Zhang adult flower', and historical figures were played alive. ”The audience sighed with emotion. The audience from Guangdong expressed that they were particularly moved to see their hometown opera and Tibetan opera on the same stage, telling the story of the connection between the two places. This is a true 'fate sharing', vividly interpreting the unity of the Chinese nation. This stage feast of the integration of Tibet and Guangdong fills the gap in the cross-border integration and creation of Tibetan opera and Cantonese opera, and writes a new chapter in the integration of ethnic cultures. It is reported that Lord Zhang in Xizang Autonomous Region was jointly created by the Tibetan Opera Troupe of the Xizang Autonomous Region and the Guangdong Cantonese Opera Theater. It is a 2025 literary and artistic creation support project in Tibet Autonomous Region and a 2026 large-scale stage play and work creation project funded by the National Arts Fund. Afterwards, the drama will also tour in Beijing, Guangdong, Shaanxi and other places. (New Society)
