Huili rooted herself in the forefront of cultural relic restoration: after 8 years of restoring 1007 hands of Guanyin, she left one hand for the future

Chen Huili, a research librarian of Dazu Rock Carvings Research Institute, led the team to undertake the protection and restoration of more than 50000 statues of Dazu Rock Carvings, a world cultural heritage, and was named the "National Great Craftsman of Cultural Relics" in 2025. As the leader of the stone restoration team of the Dazu Rock Carvings Thousand Hand Avalokitesvara Relief Protection Project, an important national stone cultural relics protection project, she and the team have successfully repaired the Thousand Hand Avalokitesvara after hundreds of years of wind and rain erosion and up to 34 diseases, making positive contributions to the restoration of large immovable cultural relics in China, and published the 450000 word monograph Exploration and Practice of Dazu Rock Carvings Protection. Looking back at her first 60 years of life, Chen Huili (see photo, taken by our reporter Jiang Feng) spent the first 30 years in Sichuan, and had no connection with cultural relics; In a mysterious way, I came to Dazu, Chongqing to repair stone carvings and achieved great results. She compared herself to a doctor of stone artifacts, who spent half her life "treating stones" and painted them with four strokes: the first stroke, halfway through the journey, she became a monk. Sichuan native, vocational school student, studied textile engineering and worked in silk and plastic factories. In 1995, she moved to Dazu Rock Carvings Museum in Chongqing to solve the problem of separation between husband and wife. What can an outsider do? At that time, the director Guo Xiangying had an unwavering principle: newly hired employees should start as tour guides - in order to familiarize themselves with cultural relics and understand their family background. Chen Huili began to memorize the lyrics, feeling the sensation as she carried them on her back. As she spoke to the tourists, she felt sorry for the damaged cultural relics and said, "If only I could repair them!" After 11 months as a tour guide, she ranked first in the exam among more than 40 people. Guo Xiangying looked at her with new eyes and chatted with her again. She understood materials and chemistry, and said, "It's perfect for repairing cultural relics. Go to the repair department!" Second stroke, professional enlightenment. Chen Huili is an impatient child and had a lot of courage when she entered the industry. The statue of the original Liu statue on Baoding Mountain has a piece of skin on its face. Chen Huili, who is less than 1.6 meters tall, climbed up a 20 meter high scaffold and stuck anchors at high altitude for three hours. In 2004, the National Cutural Heritage Administration organized a one-year training, "The assessment is very strict, and if you fail, you will 'return'." The restoration experts from Longmen, Yungang and Dunhuang competed on the same stage. She learned theory in the morning and painting in the afternoon. "Every night, she read until 12 o'clock at night." In the direction of stone relics, 17 people were finally enrolled nationwide, Chen Huili was listed, and later went to many places in China and Italy to follow the scene, "This became a turning point in my career." Where was the change? My belly exudes a poetic and scholarly aura. Chen Huili's understanding of the profession is becoming deeper and deeper: at first, she was just a craftsman who spent all her time "repairing"; Later on, it was the "doctor standing in front of the operating table" who said, "The life of cultural relics is only once, like walking on thin ice; Later on, self-study archaeology, history, and religion, not only to prolong the life of cultural relics, but also to make them valuable, "expressed with great style and self-awareness of mission. The third stroke is' leave a hand '. If we say that Baoding Mountain is the crown of Dazu Rock Carvings, and Thousand hand Guanyin is the pearl on the crown. How many "thousand hands" are there? 1007 pieces. You wouldn't expect that one of them is just detachable. The rescue protection project for the statue of Thousand handed Avalokitesvara in Dazu Rock Carvings is an important project for the national protection of stone cultural relics. Chen Huili is the leader of the stone restoration team. "For 8 years, I have been so busy that my home has turned into a hotel." One hand of the stone statue stumped her: it was damaged in the wrist. In order to find a basis for restoration, Chen Huili consulted a large amount of literature and conducted on-site inspections of Guanyin statues in more than 30 grottoes in Chongqing, Sichuan, Hebei, Shandong and other places, but still could not find a suitable solution. For this one thousandth, boil the head and the heart. Ultimately, based on the requirement of authenticity in cultural relic restoration and considering both historical and artistic value, bold innovation was made - following the principle of symmetry in the Thousand Armed Guanyin statue, a detachable "novice" was inserted into the original restoration hole of the broken hand according to the shape of the corresponding hand on the other side, ensuring the integrity of the statue while leaving space for future restoration. 'Leave a hand', leaving blank space is not only awe, but also the possibility of the future. The fourth stroke, enjoying pleasure in hardship. Chen Huili's responsibility for the restoration of stone cultural relics goes beyond Dazu. On a rock in Yuanba Village, Bashan Town, Chengkou County, Chongqing, on the Daliang Mountains, there is a precious red cultural relic engraved with the slogan of the Red Army. In the deep winter of 2024, Chen Huili received an urgent task of investigating and conducting restoration experiments on cultural relics. At 7 o'clock in the morning, she led the team to depart from Dazu and drove for 9 hours to reach Yuanba Village. Local cultural management officials led the way, and everyone carried tools and materials up the mountain. There is no road at all, some places have a vertical slope of nearly 30 degrees, "the group struggled to climb through the bushes." I fell twice and my knee was broken. I was afraid of wasting time, so I didn't make a sound and walked silently. "At 6 pm, they arrived at the cultural relic site in the protected shed," cleaned up surface pollutants, weathered and reinforced, and by the time they finished, it was already dark. "Going down the mountain was even more" deadly ". Everyone was holding flashlights, and when they encountered cliffs, they only dared to retreat and move forward. The leaves and wild grass on the mountain are covered in dew. "After safely descending the mountain, everyone was soaked through." Cultural relic protection sounds good, but in reality it is very difficult. 30 years, how could Chen Huili count such things and hardships? Now stepping down from her administrative position and continuing to work as an expert, Chen Huili is still very busy. title? "It would be nice to write about the research librarian of the Dazu Rock Carvings Research Institute." She said, "I want to keep fit and spend my old age well"; As he spoke with deep affection, he said, "When I looked at the stone carving, it seemed to have a worried expression, which was uncomfortable both here and there. Once it's fixed, you can look at it again and feel it smiling. I've recovered, thank you all..." (Looking at the New Era)
