Strengthening the application of technology to promote the symbiosis of all things - exploring new paths for biodiversity conservation through multiple measures across the country
2026-05-22
In the the Pearl River Estuary of Guangdong Province, the population of the "marine giant panda" Chinese white dolphin is about 2500, which is the largest population in the world. The first electronic fence marine type reserve in China realizes the global intelligent monitoring of the Chinese white dolphin through the linkage of multiple systems such as remote high-definition video, automatic ship identification system and unmanned aerial vehicle patrol machine nest; In the Yellow River Delta National Nature Reserve in Shandong Province, the "Oriental Gemstone" Crested Ibis has established a stable breeding population. It has also become the world's largest breeding ground for Oriental White Storks, the world's second largest breeding ground for Black billed Gulls, and the world's second largest wintering ground for White Cranes; In Jinhua, Zhejiang Province, the first county-level biodiversity friendly city in China has been built, integrating the concept of friendliness into urban planning and construction processes, reducing the cutting of ecosystems by roads, protecting flagship species such as Yiwu salamander and perennial vine, and cultivating a number of characteristic biodiversity experience sites such as pandas, pigs, and pigs... May 22 is International Biodiversity Day, and this year's theme is "Protecting local life and promoting the prosperity of all things". Various measures will be taken across the country to strengthen biodiversity conservation and ecosystem monitoring and supervision, explore ways to protect and sustainably utilize germplasm resources, and promote harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. In the high-altitude grasslands at the northern foot of the Qilian Mountains in Sunan Yugur Autonomous County, Gansu Province, the Sunan red deer, which is listed as a second-class protected wild animal in the country, is happily playing and running. Sunan County actively explores the characteristic path of "supporting conservation with breeding and promoting conservation with use", constructs a dual protection system of "live conservation+technical reserves", and collaborates with scientific research institutions, enterprises, and farmers to overcome key technologies such as breeding and disease prevention and control of red deer, improving the scientific protection and efficient utilization level of germplasm resources. By 2025, the population of artificially bred red deer in Sunan will increase by more than 30% compared to 2018, and the wild red deer population will increase from over 4200 five years ago to over 6800. In order to promote the coordinated coexistence of rare species protection and economic development, Sunan County has also built the Qilian Mountain Deer Culture Industry Park, creating a closed-loop development chain of "breeding processing cultural tourism". The local herders calculated that the income from one red deer is equivalent to 30 sheep. Through the mechanism of "enterprises+cooperatives+farmers and herdsmen", Sunan County guides farmers and herdsmen to participate in deer breeding, forage planting, tourism services and other aspects, and establishes a dividend mechanism for industrial development. The Sunan red deer is just a microcosm of biodiversity conservation in Gansu province. Wang Xin, Deputy Director of the Department of Ecology and Environment of Gansu Province, said that the level of biodiversity in Gansu Province continues to improve, and the wild populations of flagship species such as giant pandas and snow leopards continue to increase. The number of key protected wild animals and plants has reached 354. The six Dahongpao mother trees growing on the rock wall of Jiulongke in Mount Wuyi are the most precious living germplasm gene bank of Wuyi rock tea. They are more than 360 years old. Mount Wuyi City, Fujian Province, implements strict protection of original habitat, including Jiulongke Cliff into the core protection area of Mount Wuyi National Park, implements life-cycle management of Dahongpao mother trees, and monitors environmental factors and growth trend 24 hours a day. The local government is also promoting scientific research and innovation, establishing a germplasm resource protection system of "1 national core garden+N enterprise/scientific research gardens", completing the digital filing and traceability management of tea germplasm resources, and preserving 3299 tea germplasm, of which 74 were selected for the national database. Three six mother trees lead a tea forest and drive a local industry. Mount Wuyi has a tea garden area of about 148000 mu, and more than 120000 tea industry employees. The protection of rare germplasm resources has promoted the sustainable use of resources and the high-level development of the industry. Technological innovation and application make biodiversity conservation more precise. Zhang Yujun, Director of the Natural Ecology Protection Department of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, said that China is establishing a biodiversity monitoring survey, observation and evaluation system, building a survey and observation network, collecting ecosystem, species, genetic resources and other data at multiple scales and levels on a regular basis, and conducting baseline surveys and dynamic observations of biodiversity in important ecological spaces. Various regions are also carrying out intelligent construction. For example, in the Tianjingshan area of the candidate area of the Nanling Mountain National Park, Guangdong has built the first "sky sky tower ground well" integrated ecological observation platform in China. Nearly 590000 ecological factor data and more than 35000 wildlife image data have been uploaded in real time and updated dynamically, achieving full element and full cycle accurate control of ecological resources. At the Chongqing Urban Biodiversity Smart Observation Station, cutting-edge technologies such as AI species recognition and voiceprint monitoring are used to achieve 24-hour uninterrupted "health check" of biodiversity. Ma Qiang, a second level inspector of Chongqing Ecological Environment Bureau, stated that Chongqing has established a fixed observation network for biodiversity that covers important ecosystems, providing strong support for scientific protection.
