Sagadawa, Xizang: a blend of ancient traditions and modern warmth

In Lhasa in April according to the Tibetan calendar, the dawn is slightly visible. On the nearly 10 kilometer long Lin Kuo Zhuan Jing Dao, there is a continuous stream of praying believers holding prayer beads and reciting scriptures, walking calmly and firmly. The traditional religious activities of Sagadawa officially began on May 17th, the first day of the fourth lunar month in the Tibetan calendar, and lasted for one month. In commemoration of the birth, enlightenment, and nirvana of Shakyamuni Buddha, Tibetan Buddhist believers continue this traditional religious activity through prayer, pilgrimage, vegetarianism, and charity giving. Dear fellow believers, please pay attention to safety when taking the elevator and lift your belongings before taking the elevator. ”At the elevator entrance of a pedestrian overpass along the Zhuanjing Road, clear Tibetan language prompts are played repeatedly, reminding the elderly dressed in traditional Tibetan clothing. Since 2011, pedestrian overpasses have been built in Lhasa, which not only achieve pedestrian and vehicle separation and ensure traffic safety, but also reflect care in details. The installation of elevators, lowered steps, slowed down ramps, reinforced guardrails, especially on sections of roads such as Qianfo Cliff that believers must pass through, these renovations make people's travel smoother, more convenient, and safer. Seventy year old Awang Qunjiu deeply felt this: "The road surface is smooth and easy to walk on, the slopes and steps are gentle and convenient for the people, many overpasses have elevators, there are sufficient rest points along the way, and many flowers have been planted. Everything is very good." The convenience service points set up along the way have become warm post stations on the transfer route. Free drinking water is available all day, and the rest area is available for taking a nap at any time. What is even more touching is the moment of humanistic care. At a medical service point, a young healthcare worker is softly measuring the blood pressure of an elderly patient who is currently menstruating. After the measurement was completed, he carefully sorted out the rolled up sleeves for the old man. The old man didn't say much, just gently held the hand of the medical staff and placed it on his forehead to express gratitude. Now the turning lane is particularly safe, and there are also staff helping the elderly cross the street along the way, which is very considerate in all aspects. ”The words of another elder, Zuo Ga, conveyed the common aspirations of many elderly believers. The Sagadawa lunar calendar has a vegetarian tradition. As noon approached, the vegetarian restaurant next to Zhuanjing Road gradually became busy. Zahiram, the shopkeeper, began to prepare early. "Most of the people who have changed their ways these days are vegetarians. We have prepared authentic Tibetan vegetarians such as buttered dough lumps, Ginseng fruit rice, yogurt, and cabbage buns, which are rich in variety." She was particularly careful about the ingredients and cooking standards: "We select clean and hygienic ingredients and stick to the pure vegetarian standard. There is absolutely no lard, chicken oil, or any meat fat in the restaurant." The sun is rising, and the flow of people who have changed their ways is still moving forward slowly, forming a unique landscape. The traditional religious activities of Sagadawa are carried out smoothly and orderly through the devout prayers of believers. (Looking into the New Era)
