The launching ceremony of the Sanya Haitang Performing Arts Center, themed Raising the Curtain, Blooming Haitang Blossoms, was held on the 24th at the National Coast of Haitang Bay, Sanya. Scheduled for completion and opening to the public in December 2028, the complex will serve as the permanent venue of the Hainan Island International Film Festival upon completion, filling the gap in high-end performance venues and professional international film exhibition facilities in Sanya.
Located in the core zone of Sanya’s Haitang Bay, the project takes "a sprig of begonia flowers" as its core design concept, adopting a petal-shaped architectural layout featuring one main hall and multiple auxiliary buildings. Covering a total land area of approximately 36,000 square meters, it boasts a construction area of around 37,000 square meters. Its hardware facilities are fully benchmarked against the top-tier standards of the Cannes Film Festival. Inside the complex lie a 1,200-seat main auditorium, a 400-seat multi-functional hall, two professional screening halls and three dedicated film review rooms, making it one of the few specialized cultural venues in Sanya capable of hosting the full spectrum of international film festival events.
Integrating four core functions — film festival celebrations, live performances, art exhibitions and cultural leisure — the Haitang Performing Arts Center can host a full range of high-end cultural activities in one stop, including film festival opening and closing ceremonies, award galas, red carpet events, IP live shows, film premieres and cast exchange forums. Since its founding in 2018, the Hainan Island International Film Festival has drawn nearly 30,000 films from more than 100 countries and regions worldwide for exhibition and competition. Once finished, the performing arts center will provide a stable and professional home for this international film event, enabling the world-class cinematic gala to take firm root in Sanya.
As a core cultural and tourism component of Hainan’s Super Mediterranean Project, the completed Haitang Performing Arts Center will work in synergy with Atlantis Sanya to form a dual-landmark super resort cluster. It will foster an innovative integrated cultural tourism ecosystem that combines leisure vacations, arts and international exchanges, steadily elevating the development quality of Sanya’s high-end cultural tourism sector.
Huang Xing, Director of Sanya Municipal Bureau of Tourism, Culture, Radio, Television and Sports, stated that Sanya will leverage the Haitang Performing Arts Center as a vital platform to pioneer an integrated new industry model featuring "film festivals, grand live shows and tourism". The city will keep introducing premium international performing arts resources, deepen cross-border cultural industry cooperation, and strive to build the venue into a frontier hub for cultural opening-up of the Hainan Free Trade Port and the global dissemination of Chinese culture, as well as a key bridgehead for the international development of the film and television industry.(Outlook New Era)
