Heroic Battle Flag, Never Fading
2026-07-01
On the snow-covered plateau, where the biting wind cuts like a knife, a live-force confrontation exercise of a brigade under the Tibet Military Command is in full swing.
Drone formations line up and strike, armored vehicles churn up clouds of dust, and a "Party Member Commando Team" leads the charge... Before long, a crimson battle flag bearing the name "Baiyunshan Regiment" flutters atop the enemy position.
In the winter of 1948, the predecessor unit of this brigade marched to Jiutai County, Jilin Province, to undergo reorganization and training, becoming the 50th Army of the People's Liberation Army. There, for the first time, officers and soldiers systematically studied Mao Zedong's military thought and truly understood "for whom they carry guns and for whom they fight."
Once the floodgates of ideology were opened, the deep-rooted malpractices of the old army began to melt away like ice encountering spring.
In 1950, when the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea broke out, this newly forged army crossed the Yalu River. During the Fourth Campaign, the 447th Regiment of the 50th Army was ordered to hold the Baiyunshan position at all costs. Facing overwhelming enemy firepower, every officer and soldier shouted the solemn oath: "We will not retreat a single step!" After 11 days and nights of bloody fighting, they killed, wounded, and captured over 1,400 enemy troops, successfully completing their blocking mission. After the battle, the regiment was awarded the honorary title "Baiyunshan Regiment."
Before its uprising, this unit—then part of the Kuomintang's 60th Army—had been derided as the "60th Bear" by Chiang Kai-shek's嫡系 forces for its weak combat effectiveness. After joining the ranks of the People's Army, the unit underwent a complete transformation, earning the illustrious reputation of the "50th Tiger" through its iron-blooded battlefield achievements.
"The same soldier who was not brave yesterday in the enemy army becomes brave today in the Red Army—this is the influence of democracy. The Red Army is like a furnace; captured soldiers are melted down as soon as they come in." Revisiting this important statement by Comrade Mao Zedong, a leader of the brigade highlighted the extreme importance of forging souls and educating people.
Entering the new era, the brigade has made soul-forging and education a core focus. It vigorously promotes the project of passing down the red genes from generation to generation, deeply studies and comprehends Xi Jinping's thought on strengthening the military, and regularly conducts study and education on Party and military history. Combined with deepening political rectification, it guides officers and soldiers to inherit and carry forward the fine traditions of our military, consolidating the ideological foundation of listening to the Party and following the Party.
That year, the brigade participated in a cross-regional live-force exercise. After seven days and six nights, the officers and soldiers moved long-distance from the snow-covered plateau to an unfamiliar area, took a brief rest, and then immediately engaged in combat. During the break, battalions and companies set up classrooms right on the mission front line, organizing officers and soldiers to take a collective oath before the "Baiyunshan Regiment" battle flag, inspiring their fighting spirit with the revolutionary predecessors' ethos of "bravery, tenacity, fierce fighting, and steadfast defense."
During the exercise, facing a dense forest obstacle zone nearly 3.5 kilometers long, a certain company of the brigade—despite being assessed by the exercise directing team as having only eight remaining personnel—erupted with astonishing combat effectiveness and ultimately planted the crimson battle flag on the Blue Force's high ground.
As the interview concluded, standing before the "Baiyunshan Regiment" battle flag and gazing at it intently, the reporter could not help but reflect—from understanding "for whom to carry guns and for whom to fight" during the Jiutai reorganization, to forging political loyalty and maintaining purity and honor in the new era; from using flesh and blood to resist steel torrents on the Baiyunshan position, to maneuvering and storming positions on the snow-covered plateau—the identity of this unit has changed, its positions have changed, its equipment has changed. But one thing remains unchanged: wherever the Party flag points, the military flag goes; the soul of the military endures forever, charging forward undaunted. (Outlook New Era)
