On the 14th, the Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, Tse Siu wah, stated at a meeting of the Legislative Council's Constitutional Affairs Committee that the SAR will hold general elections for the Election Committee's sectoral groups on November 22 this year to elect a new Election Committee.
Xie Xiaohua said that since the improvement of the electoral system in 2021, the Special Administrative Region has successfully held multiple important elections, implemented the principle of "patriots governing Hong Kong", and ensured that the governance power of the Special Administrative Region is firmly in the hands of patriots. This is crucial for the stable and far-reaching implementation of "One Country, Two Systems" and the good governance of the Special Administrative Region.
Xie Xiaohua introduced that the Election Committee is an important component of the SAR electoral system, consisting of 1500 people, with broad representativeness, in line with the actual situation of the Hong Kong SAR, and reflecting the overall interests of society. According to Annex I and Annex II of the Basic Law of Hong Kong, the Election Committee is responsible for electing the Chief Executive elect, some members of the Legislative Council, and nominating candidates for the Chief Executive and Legislative Council.
Xie Xiaohua said that this election will be the second general election for the EC subsector since the improvement of the electoral system. The SAR government and the Electoral Affairs Commission have summarized the experience of past elections, especially the applicable experience in last year's SAR Election Committee by election and Legislative Council election, to prepare for various practical arrangements for this year's elections, aiming to ensure that the elections are held smoothly in an open, honest, fair, safe, orderly, efficient and humane manner.
