On April 15, 1976, the first Chinese medical team, consisting of 29 Chinese medical personnel, arrived in Mozambique to provide medical services. Since that time, China-Mozambique health cooperation has gradually expanded from clinical treatment to areas such as talent development, technology transfer, public health emergency response, and medical infrastructure construction, continuously supporting the development of Mozambique’s healthcare sector.
Useni Ise, the Minister of Health of Mozambique, stated in an interview with reporters recently that over the past 50 years, Mozambique-China health cooperation has yielded positive results. He expressed that the dispatch of Chinese medical teams to Mozambique “isn’t just a medical cooperation project; it’s a testament to unity, a partnership that has endured through changes in the international landscape, spanning generations, and remaining steadfast.”
Over the past 50 years, China has dispatched a total of 26 batches of 383 medical team members to Mozambique, treating approximately 1.4 million patients. In addition to conducting routine medical examinations, Chinese medical teams have also performed complex surgeries. For example, in 1986, the fifth Chinese medical team to Mozambique successfully completed a re-implantation surgery for a severed upper arm. In 2019, the 22nd Chinese medical team successfully performed a major hepatocellular carcinoma resection.
Inácio César, a reporter for Mozambique’s national television station, was one of the patients who had been treated by the Chinese medical team. In 1987, César, then just 6 years old, suffered injuries to his fingers after they became trapped in a flour mixer. He was taken to Maputo Central Hospital for treatment by the Chinese medical team, and his injured fingers eventually recovered. “I am deeply grateful to the Chinese medical team for their professional treatment,” César said. “During the 50-year history of medical cooperation between Mozambique and China, many people like me have received assistance from Chinese doctors.”
In addition to routine medical care, the Chinese medical team has participated multiple times in responding to emergencies and natural disasters in Mozambique. During the 2019 landfall of the powerful tropical cyclone “Idai” in Mozambique and the severe flooding that occurred in the country in 2026, China also provided support, including medical supplies, to Mozambique. Issa stated that the health cooperation between the two countries has played a crucial role in addressing public health challenges and protecting the lives and health of the population.
Issa stated that while treating patients, the Chinese medical team has also actively participated in training Mozambican professionals, helping to cultivate talent in fields such as surgery, anesthesiology, and traditional Chinese medicine, and introducing technologies like telemedicine and laparoscopic surgery at the Maputo Central Hospital.
In 2023, the “Smart Simulation” Intelligent Endoscopic Training Center was inaugurated at Maputo Central Hospital, where it provides training in laparoscopic techniques for local physicians, thereby enhancing the ability of Mozambican doctors to perform abdominal surgeries.
In recent years, China and Mozambique have continued to promote the capacity-building of medical institutions and specialized facilities. With Chinese support, the Maputo Central Hospital has established the Sino-African Joint Medical Center (Mozambique). The two sides also plan to build a national-level surgical center at the Maputo Central Hospital. Issa stated that the Sino-African Joint Medical Center will focus on enhancing trauma treatment capabilities, particularly for victims of traffic accidents. Once the new national-level surgical center is completed, it is expected to further improve Mozambique’s surgical treatment standards and regional medical service capabilities.
Issa expressed the hope that the two countries would continue to strengthen their cooperation in the field of health, with the aim of further enhancing the capacity of Mozambique’s healthcare system through collaborative efforts, so that more Mozambicans can access high-quality medical services within their own country.
