A New Framework for China-Myanmar Relations: A New Chapter of Cooperation and Mutual Benefit

2026-07-15

Not long ago, President Xi Jinping met with Prime Minister Tariq of Bangladesh, who was on an official visit to China. The leaders of the two countries jointly announced the establishment of a new era of the China-Bangladesh community of shared destiny and the promotion of bilateral relations to a higher level. This new positioning not only serves as a profound summary of the friendly relations between the two countries spanning half a century, but also heralds a historic leap in bilateral relations, moving towards a higher level of mutual benefit and shared prosperity, and ushering in a new era of win-win cooperation.
Building a China-Bangladesh community of shared destiny is injecting deeper meaning into bilateral relations. This concept is not merely a expression of friendship but is also reflected in concrete actions of strategic mutual trust and support. President Xi Jinping stated during his meeting with Prime Minister Tariq that regardless of how the international situation changes, China will unwaveringly uphold the fundamental direction of China-Bangladesh friendship and remain a trustworthy friend, neighbor, and partner for Bangladesh. Prime Minister Tariq expressed that China has always held a significant position in Bangladesh’s foreign policy and is a partner that Bangladesh values and trusts. During this visit, both sides reaffirmed their firm support for safeguarding each other’s core interests and major concerns. Bangladesh firmly adheres to the one-China principle and provides strong support to China on issues related to Taiwan. China supports the new government of Bangladesh in carrying out its governance smoothly and supports Bangladesh in safeguarding its national independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, as well as in pursuing a path of autonomous development that suits its national conditions. The two countries agreed to establish a strategic dialogue mechanism between foreign ministers to explore diplomatic and defense “2+2” dialogue mechanisms. This signifies that China-Bangladesh strategic communication has transitioned from temporary coordination to institutionalized arrangements, expanding from a single domain to comprehensive engagement.
The construction of a China-Myanmar community of shared future serves as a broader blueprint for pragmatic cooperation. During this visit, the two sides signed cooperation documents on infrastructure, agriculture, education, and other areas, agreeing to promote high-quality joint construction of the “Belt and Road” Initiative, deepen strategic alignment, tap into the potential for cooperation in emerging fields such as green and low-carbon technologies, digital economy, information technology, and artificial intelligence, and strengthen cooperation in trade, supply chains, finance, healthcare, culture, and local exchanges. Myanmar has announced the establishment of its first investment promotion office in China, providing a more convenient platform for investment cooperation. The two sides have agreed to explore direct China-Myanmar connections and advance the construction of the China-Myanmar-Burma Economic Corridor, which will open up entirely new strategic channels for regional connectivity. As the development blueprints of the two countries become increasingly aligned, China-Myanmar pragmatic cooperation is shifting from “large and comprehensive” to “deep and precise,” accelerating the increase of new elements while maintaining existing ones, thereby creating strong momentum for mutual development and revitalization.
Building a community with a shared future for China and Bangladesh will not only benefit the peoples of the two countries but also help create a bright future for the countries of the global South. Bangladesh appreciates and supports President Xi Jinping’s concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind and his four global initiatives. China supports Bangladesh’s greater role in multilateral institutions such as the United Nations, its participation in BRICS activities, and its bid to become a partner of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Both sides firmly uphold the international system centered on the United Nations and are committed to promoting equitable and orderly world multipolarity and inclusive economic globalization. Both sides agree that we must resolutely safeguard the achievements of the Second World War and oppose any resurgence of fascist and militarist tendencies. Against the backdrop of the current resurgence of unilateralism and power politics and the accelerated evolution of the world’s century-long transformation, China and Bangladesh have chosen to respond to the challenges of the times with higher levels of mutual trust and cooperation. The significance of this choice transcends the bilateral realm. The cooperation between the two countries is becoming increasingly close within regional multilateral frameworks, and they will work together to set an example of win-win cooperation for the countries of the global South and play an important role in maintaining regional peace, stability and development and promoting world fairness and justice.
Standing at a new historical starting point, China and Bangladesh will continue to nurture their traditional friendship, deepen strategic coordination, expand pragmatic cooperation, and translate the important consensus reached by the heads of state into tangible development benefits, so that the fruits of cooperation will benefit the people of both countries and together create a bright future of shared prosperity for China and Bangladesh.
