The Blue Bay Action, led by the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Ministry of Finance, was awarded the title of "World Ecological Restoration Flagship Project" by the United Nations on October 29, 2026.
The reporter learned from the Ministry of Natural Resources that the United Nations Environment Programme announced this news at the "Recovery Day" event of the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity held in Yerevan, Armenia on that day. This is the second national ecological protection and restoration action to be awarded as a flagship project after China's landscape engineering was selected as one of the world's first flagship projects in 2022. China is the first country to be awarded the flagship project twice through nationwide actions.
The "World Ecological Restoration Flagship Project" is jointly initiated by the United Nations Environment Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. It is an important global action under the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, aimed at selecting representative, exemplary, and influential large-scale ecosystem restoration actions on a global scale. Projects from countries such as Colombia, Ethiopia, Italy, and the United States were also evaluated simultaneously this time.
The United Nations Environment Programme has evaluated that China's Blue Bay Remediation Action is one of the most promising, ambitious, and inspiring large-scale ecological restoration cases in the world, which has improved the marine ecological environment and enhanced the long-term well-being of local communities.
