Does the child experience vomiting and diarrhea after school starts? Beware of Norovirus infection

2025-02-21

Norovirus is the main pathogen causing acute gastroenteritis in densely populated places such as schools and childcare institutions. It has the characteristics of strong infectivity, low pathogenic dose, long detoxification time, and widespread susceptibility among the entire population. Deng Jikui, director of the Infectious Diseases Department at Shenzhen Children's Hospital, introduced in an interview with People's Daily Online that human infection with Norovirus can lead to acute gastroenteritis, which usually occurs 12 to 48 hours after ingestion of the virus. The most common symptoms are diarrhea and vomiting, followed by nausea, abdominal pain, headache, fever, chills, and muscle soreness. Children mainly experience vomiting, while adults mainly experience diarrhea. He suggested that the fecal oral route is the main mode of transmission for norovirus, and it can also be transmitted through severe vomiting or toilet flushing to form aerosols that come into contact with patients. During the period of illness and within 72 hours after recovery, the infectivity is strongest. Therefore, after being infected with Norovirus, it is necessary to undergo home isolation, which lasts for 72 hours after the symptoms completely disappear. Deng Jikui pointed out that norovirus gastroenteritis is a self limiting disease that does not require the use of antibiotics. Oral glucose saline or oral rehydration salts should be taken to replenish water and electrolytes in a timely manner, and rest for 2 to 3 days to recover. But if older children experience dry mouth, dry throat, and less urine; Young children with sunken fontanelle and eye sockets, no or few tears when crying, drowsiness or irritability may indicate the possibility of dehydration and require timely medical attention. The vomit of individuals infected with norovirus contains a large amount of pathogens. If the vomit is not disinfected and disposed of in a timely manner, it can easily spread among family members, especially in families with multiple children, who should pay attention to avoiding cross infection among children Deng Jikui emphasized that norovirus has strong resistance to commonly used disinfectants, and alcohol is ineffective against it. Therefore, chlorine containing disinfectants or other effective disinfectants should be used in a timely manner to clean and disinfect surfaces contaminated with vomit or feces from patients, and contaminated clothing or bed sheets should be immediately replaced and cleaned. At the same time, when cleaning items contaminated with vomit, masks and plastic gloves should be worn to avoid direct contact and the spread of diseases. How to prevent Norovirus infection? Deng Jikui said, pay attention to hand hygiene and wash hands frequently; Drink boiled water, eat cooked food, wash raw fruits and vegetables thoroughly, and avoid eating raw or undercooked meat and seafood; Strengthen physical exercise, maintain a balanced diet, and follow a regular schedule to enhance the body's resistance.
