Recently, Mr. Li, a resident of Chengdu, was infected with Legionella after turning on his unused air conditioner for a year. Imaging examination revealed that his left lung had "whitened" by nearly half. Fortunately, the treatment was timely and I have now recovered and been discharged from the hospital. Mr. Li, who is 55 years old in Chengdu, just started using the traditional Chinese medicine for 3 days a while ago and began to experience symptoms such as muscle soreness, headache, fever, and cough. At first, he thought it was a common cold and took some cold medicine at home, but his body temperature was still above 39 ℃ after taking the medicine. Mr. Li quickly went to the Fifth People's Hospital of Chengdu for treatment. We inquired about his lifestyle habits in detail and found that he had blown the air conditioner when the temperature suddenly rose a while ago, and this air conditioner had not been cleaned for over a year. We thought he might have some special infections, so we immediately arranged a bronchoscopy examination for him, and the results showed that he was infected with Legionella pneumophila. Legionella pneumophila is a type of Legionella that typically presents symptoms within 2 to 10 days after infection, such as fever, dry cough, difficulty breathing, and may be accompanied by headaches, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and even blurred consciousness. Doctors remind that if these symptoms occur and using cold medicine or common antibiotics such as penicillin and cephalosporin are ineffective, one should be alert to contracting Legionella pneumonia and seek medical attention promptly.
