The latest research published by scientists from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in the online open edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that walking for more than 100 minutes a day can reduce the risk of chronic back pain by 23%. As a common disease that troubles people of all ages, back pain has become one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. Compared to other forms of exercise, walking has the characteristics of strong universality and low cost. Although current health guidelines recommend relieving chronic back pain through exercise, there has been a lack of specific walking duration and intensity standards. In the latest study, scientists used a prospective cohort study design to accurately record the walking data of 11194 healthy volunteers aged 20 and above using a three-axis AX3 accelerometer. These participants come from the renowned HUNT Health Research Project in Norway (baseline data from 2017 to 2019) and completed follow-up from 2021 to 2023. It is worth noting that the HUNT study, as one of the world's largest population health tracking projects, has continuously collected health data from hundreds of thousands of residents since 1984. The results showed that walking for 101 to 124 minutes daily can reduce the risk of chronic back pain by 23%; Walking for more than 125 minutes can reduce the risk by 24%, and walking intensity is positively correlated with risk reduction. Research has shown that promoting a public health initiative of walking 10000 steps per day may be more effective in alleviating the burden of chronic back pain at the societal level than emphasizing walking intensity. This provides a simple and feasible health improvement plan for the public. (New Society)
