Ensure the safety of public fitness equipment on duty

2025-06-30

Introducing public fitness equipment into residential areas is to enable people to stay fit and healthy right at their doorstep. However, some public fitness equipment repeatedly harms people due to quality, installation, maintenance, and other issues, becoming a safety hazard for the public. There are usually three types of injuries caused by public fitness equipment. One is that the procurement and production drawings are cheap, the products are cut corners, the rust prevention and load-bearing capacity are insufficient, and the quality is not up to standard; One approach is to simplify the installation process by changing the product design from "underground" to "above ground", resulting in poor stability of the equipment; There is also a lack of long-term maintenance, and severely damaged public fitness equipment is still being used. Security risks are hidden in multiple links such as production, procurement, and maintenance, and need to be addressed in a targeted manner. We must strictly control the production of public fitness equipment and prevent non-standard products from entering the market from the source. Some manufacturers disregard regulations related to outdoor fitness equipment, reduce the wall thickness of steel pipes to maintain low costs, rent qualified products for testing, and sell unqualified products at low prices. On the surface, non-standard equipment allows the supply side to sell at a low price while the demand side saves money and achieves a so-called "win-win" situation. However, in the long run, the supply side blindly compresses costs and neglects quality to meet low-priced demand, which will lead to a vicious cycle of "bad money driving out good money" and disrupt the market ecology; On the demand side, if equipment is purchased without considering product quality and only seeking cheap prices, it may lead to the public being unable to use, afraid to use, or even harming their health if used. Quality inspection agencies should further strengthen their own responsibilities to prevent non-standard equipment from being caught in the market. Market supervision departments should also fully play their supervisory and management roles, cut off the gray industry chain behind public fitness equipment, and secure the bottom line of product quality. In addition, public fitness equipment also needs to be well maintained for a long time. During the use of fitness equipment, parts may become loose or fall off, and prolonged exposure to outdoor environments and wind and rain can lead to corrosion and rust. Public fitness equipment should not only be constructed without management, but also deployed without maintenance. It is necessary to accelerate the establishment of a management mechanism that includes regular inspections, regular maintenance, and accountability. (New Society)
