Pediatric Service Year "makes it easier for children to seek medical treatment

2025-07-22

The shortage of pediatricians, insufficient bed supply, and difficulty in seeking medical treatment have caused headaches for many parents. To change the current situation, the National Health Commission will launch the "Pediatric Service Year" from 2025 to 2027, using three years to further expand the supply of pediatric services and strengthen pediatric service capabilities. As of the end of June, 1877 tertiary and 2936 secondary public comprehensive hospitals were able to provide pediatric services. ”At a press conference held by the National Health Commission on July 18th, Li Dachuan, Deputy Director of the Medical Administration Department of the National Health Commission, introduced that in order to enhance the continuity and convenience of pediatric services, the proportion of primary healthcare institutions providing pediatric services exceeds 80%, of which 98% of county hospitals provide pediatric services. With the increasing supply of pediatric services, how can we improve the capacity of pediatric services and build a high-quality pediatric medical service system? Three national children's medical centers assist medical institutions in improving their medical service capabilities, developing new businesses and technologies, and cultivating high-level pediatric medical talents. Six national children's regional medical centers cover five major regions: Northeast, East, Central South, Northwest, and Southwest, providing excellent medical services to the local areas. ”Li Dachuan said. Taking the Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center of the National Children's Regional Medical Center (Central South) as an example, the center maintains children's health in a "three-dimensional" manner through the integration of medical and preventive measures and full life cycle health management. We have built the first mother child integrated health center in China and guided the construction of 12 mother child integrated health centers in Guangdong, Guangxi, Henan and other places, "said Yu Na, Secretary of the Party Committee of Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center. At the same time as the transformation of medical service concepts, the National Children's Regional Medical Center continues to explore the expansion and sinking of medical resource supply. "For seasonal diseases with high incidence among children, the center has opened child clinics at noon, at night and on weekends, and increased the number of future visits and consultations through Internet diagnosis and treatment." Yu Na said that at present, the daily number of outpatient services has increased by 33%, and patients' waiting time has shrunk to less than 30 minutes. We are also exploring reserving 20% of the specialized number sources for community service centers to guide the first diagnosis of fever clinics at the grassroots level and facilitate green referrals for difficult and complex diseases, "said Yu Na. Faced with rare and difficult diseases in children, medical institutions at all levels have formed a close collaborative network for diagnosis and treatment. Li Dachuan introduced that each province relies on high-level hospitals within the province to build a collaborative network for the diagnosis and treatment of major diseases, including severe cases, tumors, hematological diseases, infections, rare diseases, and other major diseases. Through the network, the level of identification, diagnosis, and treatment of major diseases in children is improved, ensuring timely treatment of major diseases in the region. Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center has established a multidisciplinary team with the Heart Disease Center as the core, including obstetrics, fetal medicine, prenatal diagnosis and other advantageous disciplines. The center treats more than 2000 congenital heart disease patients annually, with newborns accounting for over 60%. ”Yu Na said that the Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center has empowered the entire region, with a cumulative output of over 700 management and medical teams over the past three years. It has also exported 209 new technologies and projects, helping Liuzhou establish its first children's hemodialysis center and shifting its advantageous disciplines and unique technologies. In the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area, we have taken the lead in establishing the 'Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Pediatric Medical Rescue and Transport Alliance', extending our service coverage to 38 medical institutions in 18 prefecture level cities in the Hong Kong Macao Special Administrative Region and Guangdong Province. ”Yu Na said that the alliance has established a cross regional referral and consultation mechanism for difficult and severe cases, and has opened up three-dimensional emergency transportation channels such as high-speed rail, road, and aviation. It has also carried out regular cross-border transportation of critically ill children with hospitals in Hong Kong and Macao, such as Macau Jinghu Hospital. The alliance's units transport more than 1000 sick children annually. (New Society)
