What preparations should be made for health and wellness during the transition of solar terms and the beginning of autumn? On the 6th, the National Health Commission held a press conference on "Seasonal Solar Terms and Health", inviting experts to give advice to the public on how to start a healthy autumn life. Wang Le, chief physician of Dongfang Hospital at Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, introduced that the key to health preservation after the beginning of autumn lies in actively adapting to the transitional climate of "alternating heat and cool" and significant temperature differences between day and night. In areas with large temperature differences between day and night, elderly people, children, and those with chronic underlying diseases such as hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and coronary heart disease should keep their head, neck, and abdomen warm in the morning and evening. The seasonal transition period is a high-risk period for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Regarding this, Wang Le stated that three common seasonal rumors need to be clarified: the first is that "changing seasons can promote blood circulation and prevent cerebral infarction". Infusion cannot "wash away" or "dredge" the formed atherosclerotic plaque. Blind infusion may increase the burden on the heart and kidney, and even induce heart failure. Secondly, it's okay if blood pressure is slightly higher, it will naturally decrease after the season changes. On the contrary, blood pressure is more prone to fluctuations during the seasonal transition period. Hypertensive patients must adhere to regular medication and monitor blood pressure, and should not stop taking medication or adjust dosage without authorization. The third is "drinking red wine and vinegar to soften blood vessels". There is currently no evidence to suggest that the above approach can have this effect. After the beginning of autumn, the weather gradually becomes dry, and some people are prone to discomfort symptoms such as dry mouth and tongue, dry skin, and itching. Is there a simple and effective way to alleviate these discomforts? Wang Le introduced that traditional Chinese medicine believes that "autumn dryness" is more likely to harm the lungs, which like to be moist and closely related to the skin and nose. Firstly, dietary therapy is the most direct and gentle way to deal with "autumn dryness". It is advisable to increase the intake of nourishing and invigorating ingredients such as lilies, pears, Tremella fuciformis, lotus roots, and yams, while reducing the intake of spicy, fried, and grilled foods. Secondly, specific acupoints such as Yingxiang and Hegu can be massaged to stimulate the body's nurturing ability. During the hot and rainy season, mosquito vectors are active. Regarding this, Ding Sheng, chief physician of Jiangxi Institute of Parasitic Diseases Prevention and Control, introduced that different mosquito species transmit different diseases. Aedes mosquitoes can transmit diseases such as dengue fever, chikungunya fever, and yellow fever; Anopheles mosquitoes are vectors of malaria transmission; Culex mosquitoes can cause the spread of Japanese encephalitis and St. Louis encephalitis; Various mosquito species can also cause the transmission of filariasis. Ding Sheng suggests that scientific mosquito prevention and control measures should be taken to achieve a combination of prevention and control. For example, wearing light colored long sleeved clothes and applying mosquito repellent for outdoor activities; Avoid entering grass and wetlands during the peak period of mosquito infestation from dusk to early morning; Install screen windows and doors indoors, use mosquito nets, and clean up water containers such as reservoirs and wells. Cover and seal them to prevent mosquitoes and insects from laying eggs and breeding; Purchase and use legitimate mosquito killing products. After spraying, close doors and windows for 30 minutes and ventilate for 1 hour before entering. Be careful to avoid food, utensils, fire sources, and power sources when spraying. (New Society)
