The level of health literacy among Chinese residents continues to steadily improve

According to data released by the National Health Commission on the 7th, the health literacy level of Chinese residents will reach 33.69% in 2025, an increase of 1.82 percentage points from 2024, and continue to maintain a steady upward trend. Health literacy refers to an individual's ability to obtain and understand basic health information and services, and make correct decisions using relevant information and services to maintain and promote their own health. The indicator of residents' health literacy level is an important indicator for measuring the basic public service level of the country and the health level of the people. The monitoring results show that by 2025, the health literacy level of urban residents in China will be 36.68%, and that of rural residents will be 30.58%, an increase of 1.94 and 1.47 percentage points respectively compared to 2024. The health literacy levels of residents in the eastern, central, and western regions are 36.71%, 32.98%, and 29.09%, respectively, an increase of 1.73, 1.50, and 1.82 percentage points from 2024. The gap between the western region and the eastern and central regions has narrowed. The basic knowledge and ideological literacy level of urban and rural residents is 41.36%, the level of healthy lifestyle and behavioral literacy is 38.99%, and the level of basic skill literacy is 31.72%. The level of six types of health literacy, from high to low, is as follows: safety and first aid literacy 58.18%, scientific health concept literacy 53.83%, health information literacy 50.83%, chronic disease prevention and control literacy 33.41%, infectious disease prevention and control literacy 32.42%, and basic medical literacy 32.22%. This monitoring covers 336 counties (districts) and 1008 townships (streets) in 31 provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the central government), targeting permanent residents aged 15 to 69. A total of 70451 valid survey questionnaires were obtained. (New Society)
