Frequent itching on the skin may be a sign of poor kidney function

For most people, itching on the skin can be resolved with just a scratch. But for patients with chronic kidney disease, itching is an indescribable pain. This itching is called chronic kidney disease-related pruritus. Recently, the Nephrology Department (Rheumatology and Immunology Department, Hemodialysis Room) of Changsha Fourth Hospital received multiple patients with this condition. Why are chronic kidney disease patients prone to skin itching and more painful? Luo Zhimou, Director and Chief Physician of the Nephrology Department (Rheumatology and Immunology Department, Hemodialysis Room) at the Binshui New City Campus of Changsha Fourth Hospital, explained that when kidney function is impaired, the accumulation of toxic metabolites in the body cannot be eliminated in a timely manner, leading to immune system dysfunction and putting the human body in a state of mild inflammation symptoms; Uremic related peripheral neuropathy, as well as elevated parathyroid hormone leading to increased histamine release, are multiple factors that collectively induce itching; Winter and dry skin after dialysis can make itching more likely to occur or worsen. It is worth noting that there are still some triggering factors that have not been fully identified and need to be comprehensively judged based on individual circumstances. The symptoms of chronic kidney disease related skin itching vary from person to person, mainly manifested as continuous and repeated symmetrical skin itching, which is more common in the trunk, limbs, especially the back. There may be no obvious rash on the itchy area, but after repeated scratching, scabs, papules, ulcer formation, etc. may appear; High temperature and dryness can worsen symptoms, and itching is more pronounced at night. When skin itching occurs, it is necessary to first rule out other systemic diseases such as primary skin diseases, liver diseases, and blood system abnormalities. What should chronic kidney disease patients do if they have itchy skin? Luo Zhimou suggests taking the following measures: precise evaluation: using the itching degree scoring method to record symptoms, 0 points indicate no itching, 10 points indicate severe itching, and the higher the score, the more severe the symptoms. Notify the doctor in advance to help them judge the condition. Maintain a good mentality: avoid excessive tension and anxiety, actively participate in social activities, cultural and sports activities, etc., and shift attention. Develop good living habits: keep the room clean, avoid high temperatures and dry environments, stay away from irritants such as dust, mites, and allergens; Moderate exercise, such as slow walking, jogging, playing table tennis and other aerobic exercises, can not only regulate emotions but also improve symptoms; Proper bathing should not exceed 20 minutes, the water temperature should not be too high, avoid strong rubbing, use non alkaline soap, gently dry after bathing, and use appropriate skin moisturizers; Choose cotton and loose clothing, cut your nails short, and reduce scratching. Healthy diet: Adhere to a low phosphorus diet, avoid consuming foods with high phosphorus content such as soy sauce, nuts, seafood, animal organs, etc., and do not drink alcohol; Cut root and stem foods (such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc.) into pieces and soak them in cold water for 2 hours. Blanch vegetables and meat first before cooking; Avoid cooking methods such as deep frying, grilling, and boiling; Reduce salt intake, it is recommended to consume less than 5 grams of salt per day to maintain nutritional balance. Rational use of medication: follow medical advice to use topical or oral medications in a standardized manner; Dialysis patients can communicate with doctors to optimize dialysis plans, improve dialysis adequacy, and reduce complications such as high phosphorus, high calcium, and hyperparathyroidism. Luo Zhimou reminds that skin itching is a common symptom in patients with chronic kidney disease. Treatment requires long-term adherence, scientific management, following medical advice, and daily care to effectively alleviate symptoms. If the skin itching continues to worsen or is accompanied by other discomforts, seek medical attention promptly to avoid delaying the condition. (New Society)
