Discussing the Elderly Care Landscape under the AI Wave

2026-10-30

Recently, Beike Public Welfare, in collaboration with People magazine, held a "New World, Old Friends - Silver Age Life Theme Salon" in Beijing, releasing an observation booklet of the same name, focusing on the issue of elderly care in the AI era. Cross industry and cross generational guests were invited to discuss the elderly life landscape in the technology wave and explore the path of combining technology and humanities to assist the elderly.

Salon clarifies the value and boundaries of AI elderly care through discussions, speeches, debates, and other forms. 82 year old performing artist Cao Cuifen shared that she actively learns online shopping and hopes that privacy controlled care robots can provide care, but the core of care is to protect the dignity of the elderly. Host Zhang Yue pointed out that in the face of the shortage of care personnel caused by aging, the elderly care field urgently needs AI assistance to reduce its burden.

The "iceberg of care theory" proposed by Peking University professor Hu Yong has sparked thinking: AI and intelligent devices are only auxiliary tools on the surface of the water, and what truly determines the quality of care is the irreplaceable companionship and emotional connection between people. During the debate on whether "technology for elderly care brings love closer or farther", guests expressed their opinions: AI can undertake repetitive care work and alleviate family pressure; But technology is only the starting point, and the process of companionship itself cannot be replaced by algorithms. Technological progress does not equal the progress of love. Intelligent technology can improve the efficiency of elderly care, but it cannot replace human participation.

A synchronized observation booklet, based on extensive solicitation and in-depth interviews, showcases the challenges of elderly people embracing the digital world: some elderly people enjoy the convenience of AI, but find it difficult to discern online information; Many elderly people are still trapped in the digital divide. Frontline observations point out that many elderly people do not lack smart devices, what they lack is patient companionship; Older people do not just want to be served, but also crave to realize their self-worth and gain recognition.

On the day of the event, Beike Public Welfare launched the "Friends with Partners" initiative, calling on neighbors to watch over and help each other, so that warmth and technology can go hand in hand. The guests expressed that solving the problem of elderly care requires not only the continuous use of AI, intelligent hardware and other tools to fill the gaps in care, but also the continuous awakening of the warmth of mutual assistance among neighbors.
